Just attended an illuminating panel discussion, so I wanted to share the letter sent to the ASA today by Sociologists for Palestine in case any sociologists could use an update about their vital work, which necessitates action for a free Palestine! 🍉

What a generative and encouraging call.
Updates in light of today's ballot from S4P here:

"The petitioners are asking ASA members to gawp at human misery, death, and destruction as dispassionate experts, blink, and proclaim that they shall not speak on the issue, as it is very complex and contested." Roi Livne and an anonymous co-author respond to the recent petition on scatterplot
An important reminder: The proposed resolution is NOT a boycott of individual Israeli academics. Per our FAQs, it does not target individual academics, nor does it prevent academics working at Israeli institutions from attending the ASA's annual meeting."
@soc4pal.bsky.social
This is incredible. Over 500 sociologists & counting have committed to BOYCOTTING the annual American Sociological Association meeting if BDS is not put back on the ballot.
We reject the Palestine exception! Let the people vote!
Very cool upcoming event with my favorites @emanabdelhadi.bsky.social & @saigrundy.bsky.social !
Come learn more about Boycott, Divestment & Sanction, and join sociologists who are committed to fighting injustice, even when it rears its head in our own professional organization.
And beyond these 500, many more are also deeply concerned and frustrated by ASA leadership’s refusal to allow the membership to vote on a member-initiated resolution. Another ASA is possible.
SOCIOLOGISTS: Have you this pledge to boycott ASA meeting in NYC if leadership keeps up their undemocratic shennangins? If you've signed, have you talked to a friend?
Pressure comes with numbers : join the hundreds who have already signed on! Let's reclaim our discipline from this nonsense!!
SIGN! and please spread the word to your fellow sociologists who want a democractic ASA!
The ASA president recently took a page out of Trump's book and overturned members' right to even vote on a resolution demanding boycott. Join us for a town hall conversation about Boycott and the Crisis of Democracy at the American Sociological Association. April 14th, 7 pm. tinyurl.com/boycottasa
Town hall for sociologists Boycott! On the Palestine exception and the crisis of democracy at the american sociological association. April 14, 2026 4pm PT/ 6 pm CT/ 7pm ET tinyurl.com/boycottasa
Join S4P for a Town Hall on the Palestine exception and the crisis of democracy at the American Sociological Association! Featuring @emanabdelhadi.bsky.social, @saigrundy.bsky.social, Gay Seidman and Howard Winant!
Among the signatories are 3 ASA presidents, 32 section chairs (past, present & elect), 45 journal editors & editorial board members, & 60 section council members.
Sociologists demand democracy, and insist that Palestine is not an exception!
BIG NEWS! Over 500 sociologists have signed on to commit to BOYCOTT the ASA meeting - no registration fees, no hotel rentals - if Boycott, Divestment and Sanction of Israel is not put BACK on the ballot!
Leadership has made a huge misstep: MANY sociologists questioning their continued membership.
Sociologists: It's all hands on deck. Have you signed the pledge to Boycott ASA if leadership continues to refuse democracy? Have you spoken to your friends to sign? We need to reclaim our discipline. Please sign, please share with at least one friend (ideally 2), let's keep the pressure UP!
I'm usually excited to go to ASA, but I will not be attending this year if ASA's leadership continues to bypass its own democratic procedures and does not allow a member-led resolution on the ballot. How ironic is it that our conference theme is supposed to be "Disrupting the Status Quo"??
Friends: if you are a member, please sign this letter to restore democracy to the Am. Sociological Association.
ASA is fundamentally a member-driven organization, relying to the unpaid work and goodwill of thousands of dues-paying members. The executive's recent actions fly in the face of that reality, and undermine the basis for our association 1/
Congratulations to @geogboycott.bsky.social for this win!!! Unfortunately, like the ASA, the AAG has chosen to block democractic procedures for a vote on an academic boycott. @asanews.bsky.social and AAG, let us vote!
Thank you everyone for your efforts to both restore democractic processes within @asanews.bsky.social and for an Academic Boycott of Israeli Institutions.
Free Palestine! 🇵🇸
3. With hopes that the member resolution is on the ballot, renew your ASA membership by April 1st to vote on the proposed resolution. Spread the word!

2. Reach out to at least five colleagues and ask them to sign on to our demands.

1. Reach out to section councils you are a member of and ask them to share our statement on restoring democracy with the section. www.sociologistsforpalestine.org/asa-boycott
Many of you have reached out with how you can contribute to the pressure campaign to get the 2026 Resolution for the Boycott of Israeli Academic Institutions on the ASA ballot.
✨Here are three things that you can do today...
If you reject the authoritarian moves of the current ASA (sociology) leadership and want to preserve democratic governance for the organization’s members, please join this boycott campaign. Another ASA is possible.
I am organizing the theory roundtables for the upcoming conference. I will, however, withdraw my submitted work, and will boycott the event if leadership fails to respond to being democratic. Members have a right to choose our future as sociologists and what we stand for.
I'd like to be at ASA in NYC this August. I've helped organize a few panels and am on an awards committee. However, if the ASA leadership does not allow the resolution to be considered through the existing procedures, I am more than happy to boycott the meeting.
Heads up #blackademics
SOCIOLOGISTS: If you're appalled by ASA's authoritarianism in refusing to put the Boycott, Divestment, Sanction Resolution to a vote, please join us in DEMANDING they follow their policies & procedures.
Otherwise, we BOYCOTT the meeting. Let's see how that bodes for "fiduciary responsibility"
