It's important that pro wrestling's roots are very blue collar working class, it evolved alongside carnie culture, a lot of wrestlers are very old school about those traditions in terms of how people get trained and come up in the business.

I think mainstream US culture struggles to understand camp in any context other than "deliberately bad spoof". The way that a performance can be exaggerated and "fake" while still being authentic and resonant and compelling.
