This took me far too long, but here is the result of the barcamp session I hosted in Groningen: codeberg.org/bbartholdy/o...
Thanks to everyone who participated!
And keep an eye on the repository as the project evolves into whatever form it takes (I have a few ideas).

So far for the #DigiArchMaintainathon I have worked on transferring projects from GitHub to Codeberg, because my values are more closely aligned with Codeberg, and GitHub's recent move to Microsoft's AI division (no way that ends well).

Today is the last day to submit proposals to speak at the rainbowR conference 🌈 Deadline is midnight, Anywhere on Earth time.
#RStats #QueerData
I basically just went eyes closed, head first into Positron (and some experience with VS Code), and I haven't turned back!
The deadline has been extended to October 15 for your CAA2025 papers! Since the proceedings will go through our free and transparent process, do not forget that you *must* share data and scripts if you have some.
Everything is explained here: 2025.caaconference.org/proceedings/

ICYMI: In September 2024, The Carpentries submitted a proposal for 1.5 million USD to the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Pathways to Enable Open-Source Ecosystems (POSE) Program, and were extremely pleased to learn that the proposal was recommended for funding.
However...

If I started using the term "Gosset's t-test", would that cause confusion?

Completely agree. I think universities should not only be more supportive of open source software, but encourage and reward contributions to them
Every scientific institute should follow this path. There is no moral stance for spending so much public money on bad software that sacrifices your sovereignty. Word/Excel are not the worst of it. e.g. The Max Planck Society spends millions of Euros annually for shitty MS calendar/email.
You can’t learn #rstats just by reading books or watching videos of other people writing R code. You will learn faster if you find some data that you are curious about and use your new coding skills to answer a question about it.
How to find fun data to play with....
Gitlens, Typist, LaTeX workshop, HTML CSS
It's open source (and not Microsoft), and the extensions make it more powerful than RStudio.
Positron! I used to jump between RStudio and VSCode (for its extensions), but now I'm 100% on positron
A plot of the top 10 pokemon with the highest hit points. Chansey, Snorlax, Wigglytuff, Vaporeon, Lapras, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, Rhydon, Muk, and Kangaskhan, respectively. The bars in the plot look like health bars with a maximum of 250 and a minimum of 0 HP, with each individual bar coloured in up to the amount of HP for that pokemon.
I couldn't resist this week's #TidyTuesday dataset.
Here's the top 10 pokemon with the most hit points (HP) from the first generation (the only one that matters). I tried to make it look like health bars by layering `geom_segment`s.

Has anyone else noticed that GitHub add-ons and file storage have disappeared from existing OSF project pages? What's going on @cos.io?
i’ve been wanting to play more with quarto’s closeread recently. it’s such an interesting storytelling technique and fairly simple to get started with 👀

Librivox is great for books that are in the public domain. The audiobooks are all read by volunteers!

I finally got around to writing up a summary of the unconference I organised in November.

I removed all shortcuts to social media apps (and others I don't really 'need') from the home screen, so now I have to go to the app drawer to find them.
It definitely cut down on my time using those apps! (Apparently I'm too lazy to scroll 😆)
