We provide a framework aimed at helping with reporting one's understanding of social media in a research paper/project and links the understanding to measuring "social media use" and to the generalizability of one's work.

Super happy that this is finally out. It started with lunch discussions & difficulties in the @sonja-utz.de (then) social media group finding 1 social media definition we agreed on. Our main point: we need to be TRANSPARENT how we understand social media in a specific project/paper.

The reason for this desk rejection was lack of novel contribution. The idea that some single items can be valid is nothing new. However, in general, researchers go as far as to "justify" the use of single item measures; however, it is considered unnecessary to claim they can be valid--validity alone is not sufficient since evidence and support for scale/measures validation need both validity and reliability. With a single item in a scale, except for test-retest reliability, reliability assessment is going to be constrained with limitations.

We got funding for this project in 2022 (Thanks to @ascor.bsky.social's digicomlab) so it took quite some time to finally get the preprint ready. Hope this is a step towards better measurement in Experience Sampling Methods. Looking forward to thoughts & suggestions!

We argue that we need specific validation steps tailored to the context of experience sampling studies: If we want to test within-person processes, we need to test whether measures are able to capture meaningful within-person changes
