Another book I could buy in person, "NÄR FANTOMEN BLEV SVENSK" is a unique work of scholarship regarding the process of turning the originally American Phantom into the Swedish ideal hero that he is today. @robertaman.bsky.social is a very good comics scholar with several amazing works published.

New book out: New Left Comics examines the leftist radicalisation in Sweden during the 70s through the lens of comic books. It uncovers the ways in which writers and artists used mainstream comics as a medium to teach and inform readers about various forms of injustices and inequality.

New Left Comics: Revolution, Socialism, and International Solidarity in Swedish Comics Why does Johan Vilde testify about Sweden’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade? Why do the young Stockholm sons, Stefan and Sacho, in Mystiska 2:an discuss class society and commercialism on their way back home from school? And why does the Phantom start a co-operative society in the jungle and act as a mouthpiece for Prime Minister Olof Palme? And in reverse: why is it almost impossible to imagine Spider-Man, Tintin, or Archie ruminating about trade union issues, gender equality on

A six panel comic of a man and a woman where their word balloons are actually other panels (there are no words) indicating future actions and explaining why they did what they did.

a three panel comic about Søren Kierkegaard in which the text of the man reads backwards and the dog forwards "Life can only be understood backwards" and the dog "but it must be lived forwards"

It's that time in my Making comics intro course when I talk image-text relations, which gives me an excuse to share 2 favorite comics that do bewildering things that can only be done in comics! Ibn Al-Rabin's seminal Le Verbe Prophétique alongside the always brilliant @tomgauld.bsky.social. So good!

Deep dive into Siegel/Shuster/Superman's origins in class today & wonderful discussion around Action 1. Ss were all new to it & quite taken by how political the comic is & refreshed by Superman as social justice/champion of the oppressed. Class is such a blast! spinweaveandcut.com/superhero-cl...

Sounds great! Fréon stuff are quite hard to come by, in my experience. I owned only a issue or two, but Van Hasselt was kind enough to send me a bunch as I was preparing to interview him.
