IMO the point about competing pressures:
"Everything you do is too expensive... AND I need you to do 100 other things that you're not doing now which are all labour-intensive and technology-intensive"
is the critical tension esp. for the kinds of mission driven publishers we want to support.

Metrolinx ‘blocked’ key tasks, then fired partners for missing deadlines: report Internal emails and minutes hint at what a source called 'pure chaos' behind the scenes

Metrolinx said it fired the German partners who were supposed to take over GO trains because they couldn't meet deadlines.

Internally, however, the group found they were waiting on several key tasks being "blocked" by Metrolinx.

Even larger schools like MPOW have issues finding the resources to support an OER program. It works best at scale and tbh seems to me to be one area where working at a national scale (if it could ever be organized) would be even more beneficial!

Alberta's access restrictions threaten privacy and democratic role of libraries, critics say | CBC News Critics of Alberta's proposed rule changes to public libraries say the true danger lies in giving the province power to dictate access and potentially snoop on which books people are checking out.

There's just so much about this that makes me furiously angry... Privacy isn't even at the top of the list...

don't know whether this is true but it does feel like it might have at least a kernel of truth... Canadian institutional modesty is definitely a thing I've experienced.

I was in a meeting that was related to comms and someone made the point that Canadian University comms focuses too much on the small scale here and now... unlike our American friends who send a lot of time and money investing in ad campaigns selling their institutions greatness to the general public

Max Plank issued the white paper 10 years ago famously saying "there is enough money in the system to go fully #openaccess" -- Now there is recognition that there might be at the macro level, but not necessarily at the local level. #UKSG2026

What I love most about these designs that @lanefab.com has been sharing is how flexible they can be. Same shell but inside could be large “luxury” flats, could be a bunch of 1br student digs, could be custom multi-generational units… so many possibilities if we just legalized the form everywhere

Why I may ‘hire’ AI instead of a graduate student “It can competently perform a lot of the work I need immediately,” this professor writes

I appreciate someone took the time to write this. I profoundly disagree with their view, but if I take the spirit of what they're saying as a good faith attempt to raise a mental issue, there's at least a conversation to be had.

Let's have it 1/🧵
