For me the big problem is mingling charitable giving that helps other people with things like donating to my kids school.
I guess Iโm saying that I feel like I have some ulterior motives when I give locally.
So I think there are degrees of how much Iโm doing it for myself vs for other people. I agree to giving to my local community. But Iโm doing it because, like you said, it makes me feel good to have less suffering around me, even knowing that when I give in other countries I reduce suffering more
I like to be honest with myself about how directly my giving benefits me.
I want some percent (33%? 50%?) of my giving to be truly charitable and not just making my own community nicer.
