I agree, but I think it is also important to link those cities to the larger metropolitan areas, including NY.
I really do think high speed rail would be revolutionary. You should not need a plane to go from NY to Chicago. But also the economic benefit of reconnecting mid-size cities to the rest of the country other than through expensive airplane hub system would be incredible.
Train travel is the best way to travel the US. I wish we had more high speed trains and more routes. Last I looked it would take 22 hours to get to Chicago by Amtrak and 12 by car. WTF.
