Synthesis of heteroleptic calcium amide complexes via manipulation of the Schlenk equilibrium Heteroleptic calcium β-diketiminate (BDI) complexes have been recognised as potent (pre)catalysts for a variety of transformations and have demonstrated valuable stoichiometric reactivity. Bulky ligands such as BDIs have been utilised to prevent unwanted dismutation and decomposition reactions of active hete

Nice to see @daltontrans.rsc.org have deemed this paper from my PhD work a "HOT article"! 🥵🥵

Me standing in front of my closing slide having concluded my presentation yesterday

Had a great time in Edinburgh at the RSC Main Group AGM this week! Some fantastic talks and posters, great company, and it was nice to get a chance to present the work we've done on our aluminium(I) trimer as well! (Shout out to my official photographer @michi-tritto.bsky.social)

a person is holding a container over their head in a kitchen .. Alt: a person is holding an insulated container of liquid nitrogen. They pour the liquified gas over an open human hand in a lab setting. The Leidenfrost effect prevents any serious injury, as the liquid boils off before transferring much heat.

Sir James Dewar, Scottish chemist, would be nominated for the Nobel 8 times, but you probably know him for his most famous invention, which never made him a penny, developed to hold ultra-cold liquified gases.

You probably own a "Dewar vessel," but you know it as a Thermos™.

Let's talk about it.

Amidines: a deeper look at the archetypal pro-ligand Amidinates ([R1NC(R2)NR3]−) are versatile and ubiquitous ligands in inorganic and main group chemistry, due to their anionic, bidentate nature and easy tunability. Herein we present the synthesis of 2...

Check out the new @bakewellgroup.bsky.social paper, published in @daltontrans.rsc.org!

A real labour of love for me, when I turned up Clare asked me to "make a few more ligands", advice I took and ran with.

See inside for all you could ever wish to know about making bulky amidine ligands...

Sorry for the potentially stupid question, I've always worked under the assumption that a JY NMR tube should not be spun, why is that the case?

The first isolation of neutral aluminium(i) trimers called cyclotrialumanes is reported by Bakewell et al. in @natcomms.nature.com.

CSD Entry OXATOA reveals a perfectly planar Al₃ ring, supported by a bulky amidinate framework.

In the paper we detail the synthesis of novel Aluminium(I) complexes, with hitherto unknown trimeric nuclearity, and we've explored their reactivity with a range of small molecules. The real highlight being the reactivity with ethene, where we isolated species with 5- and 7- membered M-C rings

This has been a true team effort and an true pleasure to be involved in. Huge credit to my fellow co-first authors @imosquire.bsky.social and @michi-tritto.bsky.social (and with Clare of course!) - this has been a long time coming! The paper wouldn't be what it is without Tobias's insights either!

Really depends on the department and the group! Some are really good at keeping track of their inventories, and others admire the organisation of others 😅
