I think X4 is the only great one among these, but it doesn't disqualify the other ones (although I really don't like them). Have you considered giving X7/X8 a try? X8 is surprisingly good despite its predecessor being. Well. X7

If I'm not mistaken there's audiobooks that explain it better but they're not in the games themselves
tl;dr what matters for the MMZ story is told during the MMZ games, if you at least know a good chunk of MMX plot, you'll be fine

Honestly I don't think the latter half of the X series is that necessary to understand the plot of MMZ, since it was written when X5 was the only ending
also, whatever happens with Zero between the games is left vague in the games anyways, so it's not that big of a loss
