This is about the air liberalisation of the 1980s and 1990s. Slashing air fares and offering more flights was/is hugely meaningful to travel and working across Europe. It's been less great on the climate emissions front.

Thanks, Ryanair, your jam-packed cheap flights from ”Brussels South” – really 70km south of Brussels – to go home to Dublin were a godsend when I first came to Belgium.

My Erasmus year wasn't like that, swapping one rainy seaside city (Dublin) for another (Hamburg). But it definitely shook me out of my little world and got me talking to people from very different walks of life.
At least if the European Commission statistics to be believed on a million babies as a result of how many people meet their partner during the student exchange (and I'd use a very large pinch of salt).
