the failure of Merrick Garland in dithering and adhering to norms that were no longer remotely adequate in the face of the threat of a Trump comeback is even more damning after watching what happened with Mueller

RFK, jr. is the worst person you ever met at a party in california, patel is the worst guy you ever encountered at the gym, bondi is the worst person you ever met at church, bessent is the worst person you have ever met at a conference, all these people are the worst versions of every stereotype

The single law change I would introduce which would infuriate the most people is totally legally exempt pedestrians from the rules of the road. You can now do anything you like if you do it on foot.

Douglas MacArthur 1880-1964
Born Little Rock, Arkansas
Commander of American land forces in the Pacific at the outbreak of World War II, General Douglas MacArthur suffered the worst defeat of his career in the spring of 1942, when he was forced to flee the Philippines in the wake of Japanese invasion.
Uttering on his arrival in Australia his famous words,
"I shall return," MacArthur now faced the task of repelling Japan's drive for dominion in the southwest Pacific. His success in that effort, combined with his own genius for self-promotion in the press, made him one of the most popular heroes of the war back in civilian America. By the time he made good on his promise to retake the Philippines in spring 1945, his reputation had reached legendary proportions, and the following September, he was chosen to preside over Japan's final surrender.
Howard Chandler Christy (1872-1952)
Oil on canvas, c. 1952
Gift of Henry Ostrow
NPG.78.271

I'm so sorry I cut off the Spanish, but I genuinely meant this as a personal photo. I didn't think it'd be relevant.

Dwight D. Eisenhower 1890-1969
Born Denison, Texas
With a talent for military strategy and the ability to work effectively with personalities of all types, General Dwight D. Eisenhower proved uniquely suited for the role of supreme commander during World War II. A career army officer, Eisenhower began his wartime service in 1941 as head of the War Plans Division under General George C.
Marshall. He was assigned to lead U.S. forces in Britain in the spring of 1942, and later commanded the Allied forces' invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy (1942-43). Named supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force by President Franklin Roosevelt in December 1943, Eisenhower masterminded the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, and directed Allied operations in Europe until the surrender of Germany in May 1945. Enormously popular with the American public after the war, Eisenhower was elected to the presidency in 1952 and served two terms.
Thomas E. Stephens (1886-1966)
Oil on canvas, 1947
Gift of Ailsa Mellon Bruce
NPG.65.63

Just took a photo of these two earlier today at the National Portrait Gallery

And for additional context, these two are prominently displayed directly opposite each other

General Douglas MacArthur in the National Portrait Gallery here as a very dramatic, somewhat impressionist, painting, more lifelike to the top of the piece and much more abstract towards the bottom

I love BUR! Is it easy to arrive at? No. Is it pleasant to be in? No. Is it a beautiful building? Think again. Does it have good food? Listen, it’s not LAX.

Star Wars has a ton of flaws in every property and the fan consensus is "let's make funny memes about them" because, for all of his flaws, George Lucas has managed not to publicly lose his mind on Twitter

On top of all the other reasons I like it, it was surprisingly respectful. Like I can easily imagine this being played in a church basement

I mean honestly, it *does* explain how elite backlash against MeToo was about as intense as the reaction to 9/11.

I learned too late that love needs no permission,
only time which neither of us had;
The words I swore have blurred to salt,
yet still I keep what I half-remember making,
to find you at the edge of things,
to end what shouldn't have begun.

There's also Trump Jr's investment in Unusual Machines

I'm not sure how much it matters to this since it seems small relative to other causes & they're already getting substantial graft via the pentagon contract but greed is greed.

Something to keep an eye on at least

I've seldom been disappointed when all I have left is rotini. Can't go with every sauce but works well enough with a lot

There is a joke I like:

"It's amusing watching Bill Kristol and Noah Smith evolve like a painting of Dorian Grey"

(I really wish I could remember who said it because I know I'm not telling the joke right either)

every major academic discipline should have a probably not monthly but like quarterly publication that writes directly and accessibly to a interested and educated but non-academic audience about the most substantively relevant empirical findings in the discipline the past several months.
