I had two college dreams as a HS senior: either Mills College to study experimental music (final choice!), or Hampshire for my self-designed historical puppetry major.

It is such a disappointment that current weird kids will have neither option available to them.

A huge loss, a bad sign. Plus the elimination of Hampshire College means an end to one of the best things about Hampshire: getting to take classes there on UMass tuition. (I did, all the sweeter for having been accepted to but not being able to afford Hampshire.) RIP “the Five Colleges.”

Tween came home talking about a "gayship," and I thought he was talking about the Pequod but turns out he was referring to a gay relationship on an anime show.

the most german story possible: a nietzschean dentist-philosopher and his burro-loving mistress; misanthropy dressed up as libertarian settler life; a hausfrau who gives birth in a cave; a fractious polycule headed by a baroness; poisonous chicken www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tHu...

A letter-sized envelope decorated with a black ink drawing of two seated men, facing each other. On the left, the man is perched on a cushioned, tasseled chair and footrest atop a spindly stem, labeled "Art." On the right, a man perched in the branch point of a spindly tree branch, labeled "Nature." Addressed to "Miss Sylvia Simons 3240 Lake Shore Dr Chicago 13 ILL" across the bottom. A red 5¢ airmail stamp with a plane in the upper right corner and the franking mark is from Boston, MA, dated May 8, 1948, and also includes a statement to "BUY U.S. SAVINGS BONDS ASK YOUR POSTMASTER."

‘We’re losing accessibility’: America says goodbye to the mass-market paperback The so-called ‘pocket book’ sold in supermarkets is being phased out across the US, the latest sign of an ongoing shift in how people are choosing to read

“Paula Rabinowitz … argues the format’s genius was its physical intimacy and portability … ‘I consider [the mass market paperback] one of the significant technological interventions, of the 20th century.”

I guess I have to say this too: staff worked ourselves ill to do our best for students and we didn't make the decisions that led to their dissatisfaction *but we know that we'll bear the fallout from it.* We are already losing jobs, departments, campuses, fields of expertise to government decisions.

I think the greatest gift college professors in the humanities can give to students right now is a seminar room where, for 80 minutes twice a week, nothing that happens to them is a sales pitch for an AI product.

(1/3) It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Teresa de Lauretis (1938–2026), an internationally renowned feminist and film theorist whose work reshaped the fields of cinema studies, feminist theory, and queer thought.

The analog classroom is ironically the most innovative environment you can create in 2026. Cut out the noise and you create a superior learning situation.

But it is a battle to maintain, especially when admin pushes “no cost” or “low cost” online books like they do at my comprehensive public uni
