'You Can’t Live Without Us': How Big Oil Pivoted from Climate-friendly Messaging to Normalise Dependence on Fossil Fuels Four of the world’s biggest oil and gas companies have spent the last four years systematically shifting away from climate-friendly advertising to push a new message: fossil fuels are here to stay, a ...

"The report found a 'consistent and coordinated narrative shift' from attempts to portray the companies as climate leaders to embracing... the idea that the world can’t function without oil and gas..."

"The oil industry is spending $7 billion a year telling you oil is inevitable not because it’s true, but because it desperately needs everyone to believe it. If everyone does not believe this, they are screwed." 🔥

Our new report serves as a toolkit to help the ad industry stop believing it, too.

Fossil fuel propaganda is evolving A new analysis of nearly 2,000 fossil fuel ads finds Big Oil has moved from green promises to insisting oil and gas are inevitable. (They're not).

Big Oil is no longer trying to convince us they want to preserve a safe & stable climate

Now, they're focused on convincing us that the world is only safe & stable if they're in charge

That's the thesis of a new @cleancreatives.bsky.social report analyzing 2000 oil ads, exclusively in HEATED today

It's astounding how much CO₂ we put into the atmosphere each year by burning fossil fuels.

For comparison, we all agree that plastic pollution is bad, but the mass of ALL THE PLASTIC humanity has ever produced is only 25% of the CO₂ we emitted into the atmosphere in 2025.

The ad industry has a dirty little secret. Well, actually, it's not little at all.

🌏 💰 Fossil fuels are responsible for 75% of carbon pollution, but less than 1% of global marketing spend.

FACT CHECK: Wind turbines are responsible for less than 0.01% of human-related bird deaths.

Climate Models Can’t Explain What’s Happening to Earth Global warming is moving faster than the best models can keep a handle on.

Hi pals. Today I wrote about the unsettling mismatches between what climate models say should be happening and what is actually happening. We're pushing the Earth past the limits of our physical understanding. This is a gift link: www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

Donald Trump didn’t win by a historic landslide. It’s time to nip that lie in the bud | Mehdi Hasan In 2024, we have a new post-election lie – Trump didn’t just win, Republicans say, but he won big. He won a landslide. That’s false

"Trump won the crucial blue wall states... by 231,000 votes? So if just 116,000 voters across those three swing states – or 0.7% of the total – had switched from Trump to Harris, it is the vice-president who would have won the electoral college … and the presidency" - me for the Guardian:

If I’m ever in doubt about whether working on fossil fuel advertising & PR is really climate action, I just need to read a story like this about the PR firms allegedly helping Exxon hack climate activists and I am reassured I’m doing the right thing.

For centrist elites, it's called a "policy disagreement."

For the working class and marginalized communities, it's a matter of life or death.

Do not normalize extremists.
