A lioness left to watch over a dozen or more cubs gazes expectantly into the distance, at another lioness returning through the tall grass. This one was sensing that the hunt failed and that she and the we’ens wouldn’t be getting lunch yet. Her hopeful look became a very grumpy and very dangerous-looking snarl when it became clear there would not be food yet. From southern Serengeti, where there is an astonishing super pride.
Little bit of feline togetherness as a watchful mum, with a pride’s entire batch of cubs to mind, gazes intently at a returning adult female. Everyone was hoping for lunch, but the returning female carried bad news about an unsuccessful hunt. #cats #nikon #wildlife #photography #nature #safari
Orchid Mantis (Latin: Hymenopus coronatus) The Malaysian flower mantis, or orchid mantis, is a very rare insect. These mantises come in a variety of colors, ranging from pink to yellow to white.

Witness the elegance of the swimming Feather Star, a crinoid that dates back to the Ordovician era, over 480 million years ago. A true marvel of evolution in our oceans.
She had me at “we believe in science” 🇨🇦
Perched near its mate, these birds are almost always found in pairs. Little bee eaters are wildly colourful, like all other bee eater species, making them a wonderful splash of colour amid the baked-dry savanna vegetation of the peak dry season in Serengeti.
Little bee eater, hanging out just after dawn in Serengeti. These little gems are determined insect predators, as their name implies, but they aren’t limited to bees. Saw a pair take out a lovely butterfly. 🦋 😵

A pair of D’Arnaud’s barbets in the honey dry scrub of western Tarangire National Park, which had just been burned to enable grass growth when the rains return. Quite a ghost town at the time except for these beauties.

Canada’s natural beauty is central to our history, our identity, and our way of life — and we’re going to protect it.
It's #MacroMonday. The fine detail of this spectacularly beautiful luna moth was found with a 105mm Micro Nikkor lens on a #Nikon D750. #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #EastCoastKin #macrophotography #macro #MacroLovers #lepidoptera #moth
Drought, it turns out, can drive higher antibiotic resistance in soil bacteria, Newman and her colleagues report in Nature Microbiology. That resistance may be working its way into human infections too, the researchers found.

Male ostrich in Serengeti. Some lions nearby but they were having a sleep.
Today’s #birdOfTheDay theme is #grounded, so here is the largest bird on Earth, the decidedly earth-bound ostrich. This male was in Serengeti, hoping to find a food, females, and safety from predators. #birds don’t have it easy out there. #wildlife #nature #photography #nikon
Looks like the Crescent was brand new too. Perfect shot.
As we head into another wildfire season:
"We find that the observed increase in extreme fire weather bears a clear externally forced signal, detectable at 99% confidence above natural variability and attributable to human-induced climate change."

Weather forecast for the next couple of days in Ottawa. Lot of variation!
We have entered the spring chaos period of annual #weather up where I live. Tough week for the #birds but also for #insects that overwinter aboveground as adults, of which there are a few.
A perched member of the family enjoying the security and view from a cupboard. Brilliantly coloured male parrot!
There is a Senegal Parrot in my cupboard. Meet Tango the Rescue birb, who has become an extremely cheerful and super social little flirt. Not a talker but very communicative. Like parrots in general, he is not domesticated.

I enjoyed that. One great big dad joke :)
Lovely little band of goslings. Nice work, mate.
I think of Ansel Adams and the wonders he captured generations ago when I think I need better tech to be a better photographer.
Still, amazing tech these days gives me a leg up that my relatively limited talents and limited time for practice cannot replace.
Reverend Jesse Jackson called on each of us to be heralds of change, to be messengers of hope; to step forward and say “Send me” wherever we have a chance to make an impact.
How fortunate we were that Jesse Jackson answered that call. What a great debt we owe to him.
Amazing capture. Well done!

"U.S. military investigators believe it is likely that U.S. forces were responsible for an apparent strike on an Iranian girls' school."
"The strike would rank among the worst cases of civilian casualties in decades of U.S. conflicts in the Middle East."
“I’ve got a couple dozen hostile and extremely large individuals impeding an officer—I need as many agents as you can send me, now!” said Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Ken Fischer
My parrot would like nothing better than a gentle foot tap but I’d have some serious toe punctures to remember the incident by. He is a tiny, lethal velociraptor when feet are around.
We are fortunate to have an amazing panel with diverse experiences and deep expertise. I think we will be able to craft an exciting contribution on citizen/participatory science potentials for Canada.
