A lot of places offer swatches, which helps. I learned through research, and lots of ordering swatches and sample packs but for sure it can be very daunting if you don't know where to start. It's gonna be ok though! Think of it as learning a new skill
Free workshop/panel idea: a "fabric literacy" panel. If Joann's goes out of business (we've had this scare before) a lot of cosplayers who just pick up fabric to use and don't know what it's called won't know what to do when they have to start shopping online.
