A big part is that liberal Catholics understand that you can find Communion in the world writ large, while conservative Catholics feel like it should only exist within the strict hierarchies of the human institution built on the rock the builders discarded, which now disagrees with them.

Liberal Catholics agree that the Pope isn't the be-all, end-all for morality. What they didn't do is claim they could speak for Catholicism more than the Pope - they just either lapsed, or left. Been told I'm a "cafeteria Catholic" my whole life, and now the shoe is on the other foot.

You cannot sustain the emotional energy to constantly protest. That's why, in DSA, we want to funnel people into organizing - you need to build, brick by brick, the networked/robust support system to fight against oppression and authoritarianism.

Immediacy is the reason. If you protest and protest and protest, and nothing changes (and in fact, retribution is enacted on you), you burn out. Simple as. That's the grinding down of authoritarianism. We put 1m in the streets protesting Iraq - but years later, Abu Ghraib? Everyone was tired.

Like I said, I don't know if he's truly for the working class . But I know Jasmine isn't, even if she co-sponsored M4A. It's easy to co-sponsor something you think will never come up for a vote, and her actual voting record is not progressive at all, let alone working class leftist.
