Balancing a certain amount of trust you need to give to #TeslaFSD when driving, against driver complacency is a tricky business when using any autonomous system.
Here, I didn't hear or see the emergency vehicle before the car pulled itself over to let them pass.

It's hard to understand some driver's actions but I do look forward to when all autonomous systems prioritize safety over hype and headlines.
In this instance, there wasn't much for #TeslaFSD to do as the driver ahead executed this dick move, luckily (the operative word) without incident.
Nice!
There is an enormous difference between approaches by individual companies to this technology. I would hardly equate Tesla's approach to other companies like Waymo.
I do like how #TeslaFSD moves over, when possible, for cars on the shoulder to ensure safety.
Coming up to a CV/Link crossing in Palm Springs (a 52-mile multi-purpose trail along the Whitewater River to Coachella) with a blinking light signifying they wanted to cross this relatively busy road. #TeslaFSD recognizes it, and lets the biker cross.
Definitely, nicer than I would have been.
I wasn't sure what this was (it was rather large) but Tesla's FSD saw the debris in the road sooner than I did and took aggressive action to ensure I didn't run it over.
It's great that #TeslaFSD backs off from passing this truck on the right, as it moves into my lane. It would have been even better if it had anticipated this truck moving into my lane to avoid buffeting the truck on the shoulder up ahead.
In two years, they will totally outdated and will only have software updates for a few years after that, that assumes they are still a car company. Why would anybody pay this much given that? 🤦♂️
File this ... again ... under two steps forward and one step back. Slowing for an emergency vehicle, on the other side of the road, that is not in an emergency situation.
No sirens and no flashing lights. #TeslaFSD does seem to correctly identify the emergency vehicle but doesn't act appropriately.
Initially, I wasn't sure why we were exiting the 51 and getting onto McDowell but I've learn to trust some aspects of #TeslaFSD.
Real-time traffic, navigation and autonomous driving, all wrapped up into one. It's hard to beat.
Crossing a busy intersection with limited options for safe passage, #TeslaFSD sometimes requires quite a bit of courage.
Looking left, it's relatively clear and predictable. But with cars backed up from the light on the right, it's less clear.
Make sure you're paying attention and are ready.
I got thanked for nothing. #TeslaFSD did a good job anticipating this pedestrian's movements and desire to cross the street. I might not have seen them in time and the pedestrian even hesitates slightly to make sure it was safe to cross.
Admittedly, it's a complicated series of ramps and highways, Route 51, the 10 and 202 all come together in this part of downtown Phoenix, but seriously. There is plenty of time and very clear signage but #TeslaFSD always waits until the last possible second to merge when going North on Route 51.
Again, it would be nice if the focus was on provable safety increases and real Level 3 capabilities but we'll see.
"Rivian’s most powerful R2 has more range than initially estimated, and it's more efficient than the Tesla Model Y." D'OH!

Going to the dentist today and still amazed at how well Tesla's FSD gets me from one place to another, finds a space, parks, and takes it out of gear. It's just as inconsistent as to whether it fronts or backs into a space.
Now if it would just unfasten my seat belt and open the door, we'd be good.
Weird procession today into downtown Phoenix. An unidentified paneled truck, followed by a Phoenix Police Department Mobile Command unit, being escorted by about a dozen motorcycle police. Been living downtown for over a decade and never seen anything like it.
Right out of a Steven Spielberg movie.
Makes a lot of sense given the war, which is making the cost of gas way more expensive and volatile than in the US.
I guess people didn't need incentives other than skyrocketing fuel prices. EVs by any means possible.
Living downtown you see a lot of this, people just in the way.
I have to admit, #TeslaFSD did a pretty good job of navigating around these obstacles.
The parked truck and the parked car, with a third vehicle moving around the other two. This doesn't prove it's safe, but it is impressive.
I was going to take over and take the route south to the left, which is normally the way I go but it did it last minute. I normally doesn't like this route because it goes through the business district of downtown. It tends to avoid crowds.
Another recent instance where #TeslaFSD just can't pick a lane. After spending time getting out of the 7th St turn lane, it decides it wants to exit anyway. Then once off the exit, it can't seem to decide which direction it should go.
Spoiler Alert: Either way would get me where I wanted to go.
Over the weekend, we were treated to a fairly dystopian view of Route 51, south bound into Phoenix, as part of a pavement improvement project. This weekend's work removed surface pavement from this stretch in preparation for diamond grinding.
Between the dust and the lack of cars, it was weird.
Fun fact: Tesla's FSD is so cautious, if you can figure out if they are using it, it's easy to prevent them from merging.
Even other Teslas take advantage of it! 🤦
I know it’s me, but I think things like this are very funny. There are very few cars in the parking lot, the spaces are wide open, and it still takes #TeslaFSD three corrections to park.
When it started the third attempt, I had to end it.
Why is it always one steps forward and two steps back?
The car is beautiful and I love the little "taxi light" at the top of the windscreen.
Waymo's been in and around Phoenix since before 2020 and driving autonomously even in parts of Scottsdale and the surrounding cities for years.
It is now very odd seeing a driver behind the wheel. I am sure there are loads of reasons for this but it's weird all the same.
