My brain tells me it's the same as offering font size options that are too small for some users to use along with the ones that are big enough. But also my brain really loves subtle, muted color palettes and I'm suspicious it just wants to be told it's okay to include them.

Accessibility question I don’t want to bungle: Is it okay to include themes that don’t meet a11y contrast guidelines so long as the defaults (and other theme options) do? Would love thoughts from designers/devs and especially people who actually use high-contrast setups day-to-day.

That’s an important distinction.

I strongly believe that accessibility is best served as a set of options the person in front of the screen can dial in for themselves. Turns out, that’s tricky when the person changes screens every other minute.

Is it really intuitive, human-centered design if you’re not baking in accessibility from the start? Which humans are you designing for exactly?

Sometimes I need to take a minute to "shake out my brain" before I can get started (or keep on keepin' on) with a project. Does anyone have a favorite micro activity they keep coming back to? I just tried making some more coffee using my left hand and barely avoided disaster.

Not knowing can be an advantage if you’re genuinely curious enough to figure things out anyway.

Building a habit of always using semantic elements took me a hot minute, but has proven really valuable in helping shape the way I think about presenting content. And not just for screen reader users either, it’s fundamentally improved the experience for everyone.

So very true. Each part of the system should be considered in how it is actually having an affect on a person's experience - both digitally and physically. Accessibility shouldn't be an extra layer. It’s just design done right to begin with.

I have an interactive demo up to go along with the non-linear font scaling article I shared yesterday. Check out how drastically linearly scaled zoom can affect your intended layout.

How Would You Know? - Mark Zebley - Official Music Video YouTube video by markzebley

Happy spooky season! I put together a music video for my song "How Would You Know?" with vintage (and public domain) clips from the 1937 classic "Skeleton Frolics." It felt right. Hope you enjoy!

After thinking it through, it makes total sense. Sure, a negative tabindex removes the element from the tab focus flow, but then it also makes the element itself focusable when interacted with. Which is 100% the opposite of what I was trying to do to begin with.

Went too far in the pursuit of accessibility 😂 Turns out no matter how pure the intentions for hiding your decorative elements are, you still can’t stack “aria-hidden” and “tabindex=-1”

Ahhhhhh, gotcha. Still massively disappointing, but not at the level of ineptitude I had thought.

Hey now, I name… some of them. Even more of them if I need to share the design. 😄

A Framework for Evaluating Browser Support • Josh W. Comeau Lots of exciting new features have been landing in CSS recently, and it can be tough trying to figure out if they’re safe to use or not. We might know that a feature is available for 92% of users, but...

The post is up!

It’s about the mental framework I use when deciding whether or not to use a modern CSS feature, how to interpret the caniuse support numbers.

Recharging the creative juices at Glenstone in Baltimore last week - an autumn visit was THE move for the trails. The whole place reminded me of Crystal Bridges back home in all the best ways. I always leave places like this with a handful of new ideas and inspirations. Where do you go to refill?
