Two headlines from last week tell an interesting story if you’re paying attention. 👀
Posts by George Washington University AAUP
We filed suit against the Trump administration (again) today to block the implementation of an unlawful executive order that seeks to undermine inclusion & equal opportunity, threatens government contractors w/ criminal prosecution, & chills protected speech.
These are not normal times.
“They tried to weaken higher education, but instead they built a movement to fight for the future...
They can attack our institutions, but they cannot stop our movement….We will not stop until we have the higher education system and the democracy we all deserve.”
— Todd Wolfson, AAUP President
"Students should be free to make up their own mind, but in order to be free to do so, they must be exposed to different ideas. We can't just expose them to conservative ideology approved by the board of regents or the governor of Texas."
— Martin Peterson, Texas A&M AAUP
NEW: Preliminary findings released today from the AAUP’s annual Faculty Compensation Survey reveal that real wages for full-time faculty decreased & remain below pre-pandemic levels.
The FCS is the largest independent source of data on faculty salaries. Check out preliminary findings below.

Columbia must move beyond performative listening & commit to a true shared governance model where student & faculty voices carry real weight in shaping the university’s future.
True institutional stability requires leadership to be accountable to its community, not just a closed circle of trustees.
RIGHT NOW: PSU AAUP members are rallying outside final board of trustees meeting before the worst layoffs in PSU history. The cuts are expected to target 200 workers, decimate 19 programs, & severely impact hundreds of students
This could all be avoided.
It’s time to fight.

“They want to do things which tend to be illegal. They have a penchant for illegality. They can be as thorough as they want, but if they want to stop freedom of speech, they're going to have a problem.”
— Todd Wolfson, AAUP President on the Trump admin's recent fondness for launching lawsuits.
Full-time salaries for most categories of faculty have remained about the same since 2002, adjusting for inflation, while admin pay soars.
Faculty have had enough. We’re fighting back nationwide.

#aaup taking the lead in resistance to the authoritarian attempts to destroy US education.
"Together, our institutions have helped to build the freedoms now under attack. Reclaiming those freedoms, & the responsibilities they entail, begins with a respectful, democratic knock on the board-room door."
New op-ed in the @chronicle.com by Columbia AAUP leaders.
You don't say...👀
“What you’re seeing there is that universities are spending the more university administrators are spending the money on themselves. They pay themselves more, and they hire more people to do less work.”
Now, that's a nice shirt!
Oscar-winner Ryan Coogler recalling how a college writing professor pushed him to become a screenwriter & the possibility of #Sinners being taught in film curriculums someday:
“I have so much respect for professors…for dedicating their life to future generations & making sure their minds are solid.”
All evidence to date suggests that the CPHE is a partisan political body aiming to transform higher ed in a manner desired by Republican extremists & the donors who back them…a Trojan horse determined to use any power awarded it to bend public higher ed to their ideological agenda.
Stand with the VSU Fired Six!!!
Reinstate The Fired Six!
Reinstate The Fired Six!
RIGHT NOW: The VSU ‘Fired Six’ are standing w/ the Virginia Public Sector Labor Coalition calling for all public service workers, including higher ed & home care workers, to
be included in historic collective bargaining legislation being debated at the Virginia General Assembly.

The VSU ‘Fired Six’ takes the Virginia State Capitol to demand their jobs back & for the General Assembly to pass full collective bargaining rights for all higher ed workers.
www.courthousenews.com/home-care-an...
Today, the VSU Fired Six brought the fight to the Virginia Capitol to advocate for higher ed workers to be included in collective bargaining legislation so that VA workers can be empowered to negotiate for workplace protections so illegal terminations without due process end.
#reinstatethefiredsix
VA Dems ran on a pro-worker agenda, yet are leaving workers behind @aaup.org @aaupmason.bsky.social @aft.org
Don’t cut higher ed workers out of collective bargaining!
@abigailspanberger.com @donscott757.bsky.social @senlouiselucas.bluesky.bot @ssurovell.bsky.social
The majority of faculty on campus work on semester contracts w/no job security. Even those with tenure can be denied due process. Don’t cut us out of collective bargaining. The higher ed lobbyist agenda is NOT pro-worker! @donscott757.bsky.social @senlouiselucas.bluesky.bot @ssurovell.bsky.social
Collective bargaining means stronger families, stronger communities, and a stronger VA economy. We need a CB bill that includes ALL workers, including higher education AND home health care workers. Faculty need CB too - read: drive.google.com/file/d/1ItRS...
An Invitation: Get to know your Governing Board.
Academic governing boards exercise significant & often final legal authority over the colleges & universities they rule. We need a rebalance of this power.

Brad Lander: “It’s pretty outrageous…once people think that they don’t have to follow the law because the president doesn’t, workers suffer, our universities suffer, students & faculty suffer.”
St. John’s University can’t just UNrecognize faculty unions after 56 years. That’s not the law works.
Reinstate the Fired Six at VSU!
Six tenured & tenure track faculty members were abruptly fired at Virginia State University without cause or any semblance of due process.
Sign this petition to demand their reinstatement & a public commitment from VSU to honor tenure & end arbitrary dismissals.
“Two powerful teachers’ unions that have committed at least $27.5 billion to Apollo wrote a letter to the SEC this week calling for federal regulators to investigate Apollo’s “apparent lack of candor” over its relationship with Epstein.”
Let’s get this investigation going NOW.

“Abolishing gender programs & the lessons they have taught, will, Trump & his acolytes hope, undermine our ability not just to condemn, but also to critically analyze the policies & practices they want to impose.”
Must Read by Joan Scott, member of the AAUP’s Committee on Academic Freedom.
Reminder: Never capitulate to tyrants.
Fight Back.
