APOD: 2026 February 9 – Miranda Revisited A different astronomy and space science related image is featured each day, along with a brief explanation.

My image processing was featured on NASA APOD today! I didn’t expect this

I present three maps of Titan: one in visible "true" colors (albedo scaled and gamma corrected), one in enhanced colors (linear albedo scale with a factor of five), and one of the lakes. In this thread, I will briefly describe how the impenetrable haze was bypassed.

Processing this view was so, so difficult. A lot of warping to correct for rotation of Ganymede was required and some parts appear to be warped oddly. I maybe rushed it, and there are some deficiencies in the final image. But I'm still satisfied with the results.

Ganymede in 1979 from Voyager 2 (mosaic)
true color, processed from the raw data using @askaniy.bsky.social's TrueColorTools
I used 9 OGBV frames for this processing.
the edge of the disk is slightly cut off, so a small rendered view was inserted and spliced in.
manual processing took ~3.5 hours

Today on arXiv: The recent JWST TRAPPIST-1 e papers.

They are somehow not even the biggest news in the list. Today's arXiv day's absolutely stacked.

Pseudo-MPEC for A11pl3Z

So uh, there's a new interstellar object discovered at Chile yesterday. Name is A11pl3Z, has a hyperbolic trajectory of eccentricity 14±4 (WTF). Currently appmag 18, 4 AU away from Earth, and coming to 2 AU perihelion this October.

This is a picture of the Kuiper belt object 2013 CG269, as seen by the Subaru Telescope on 24 February 2017. It shows a zoomed-in patch of sky, peppered with fuzzy white dots and smudges against a gray, grainy background. The white dot at the lower right is circled and labeled "2013 CG269" in yellow.

Coincidentally, there is an unknown faint moon of Jupiter right next to 2013 CG269. This unknown moon of Jupiter is the fainter white dot located left of center, circled and labeled "Jovian moon" in cyan.

A screenshot of a scientific paper titled "LIGHTCURVE AND ROTATION PERIOD OF 46925 BRADYHARAN" in bold. Below the bolded title are the authors, whose names from top to bottom are:
Daniel P. Bamberger
Sam Deen
K. Ly (me!)
Elvis Oliveira Mendes
Arndt Schnabel
Guy Wells

To the right of the title and authors list are two rectangular plots with squiggly curves across them. The top right plot shows the brightness of asteroid 46925 Bradyharan over time, while the lower right plot shows the root-mean-square error (RMS error) of different rotation periods.

Hiya! Over the past few months I've been silently working on several astronomy projects. Here's what I've been up to lately! 🔭☄️🧪
1. I discovered a Kuiper belt object! (2013 CG269)
2. I'm coauthor of a brand new paper by @renerpho.bsky.social et al. on the rotation of asteroid Bradyharan!
