I don’t think a lot folks understand how massive Péter Magyar’s election was today in Hungary over Viktor Orbán.

It was a massive 33% swing in votes. That’s insane. That would be like a Democratic supermajority being created in Congress overnight.

Holy shit.

Ah, yes: the mask slips immediately.

We need to talk about far-right radicalisation in rural Ireland, seriously and urgently.

Ireland has:

🌊The mighty Atlantic Ocean battering our western coast for tidal
🌬️Wind howling across the country for turbines
☀️Long bright days that stretch into night in summer for solar

But loud fools still call for dirtying the environment even more 🤦🏽‍♀️😳

Exempting women from voting isn't a gift, it’s a gag order wrapped up in a bow.

Framing disenfranchisement as "freedom from worry" is just a polite way of saying you want women silent and powerless.

I've decided to start using rss feeds again. I had a bunch of emails I never actually read... so I would benefit the planet best by turning those off.

Any suggestions for good blogs to follow?

Support the people patrolling the streets to keep our neighbors safe from ICE! They have been working so hard, and as gas prices rise, their work gets more expensive too.

I sent them $50 today! Can you?

(International folks can send me PayPal and I’ll pass it along! @coldwater, put ⛽️ in memo)

Increasingly of the opinion that the correct answer to the Trolley Problem is "fuck you, why are you so fixated on finding reasons to justify killing people?"

We settled on Gran Tourismo by The Cardigans. Baby seems to be a fan. I'm still looking for other album suggestions, these late night/early morning musical explorations might not end for a while.

Any album suggestions? Been sat listening to Fin De Siècle by The Divine Comedy. Baby is nowhere near tired and we're getting dangerously close to the end of the album.

You may be tempted to roll your eyes and say that this was obvious, but there is a substantive difference between pointing out there is a slippery slope and having solid evidence that Ring's CEO is planning to expand Search Party beyond lost pets. Kudos to 404 Media.

BREAKING: The Department of Education has ended its directive that attempted to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in schools nationwide.

This is a victory for academic freedom and education equity.

Has anybody had the gumption to suggest levelling the park in favour of waterfront property? Perhaps because they know someone who could do it.

‘The trend is irreversible’: has Romania shattered the link between economic growth and high emissions? Emissions have plunged 75% since communist times in the birthplace of big oil – but for some the transition has been brutal

Romania:
"...has decoupled economic growth from pollution faster than anywhere else in Europe, & perhaps even the world. Its net greenhouse gas emissions...fell by 88% between 1990 & 2023.... Emissions have plunged by 75%."

AI is not a peer, so it can’t do peer review If we still believe that science is a vocation grounded in argument, curiosity and care, we can’t delegate judgement to machines, says Akhil Bhardwaj

'to treat peer review as a throughput problem is to misunderstand what is at stake. Review is not simply a production stage in the research pipeline; it is one of the few remaining spaces where the scientific community talks to itself.' 1/3

I'm currently listening to RumbleOfThunder by The HU.

To suggest that a country as wet and flood-prone as Ireland shouldn't have established mechanisms in place for rapid delivery of flood relief is absolutely nuts. This isn't a surprise act of God. It's common.
Disaster preparedness should be a basic aspect of any government's portfolio. #Spéirgorm

What's really concerning about this bill (second stage tomorrow) is that the power within it - to find and categorise us by our biometrics - is *NOT* the power that was in the heads of bill when we were in pre-legislative scrutiny last year.

There has been no public/democratic discussion about this
