Any kind of interruption from your browsing experience is a high-stress situation. Modal popups on modern websites are bad enough, but Anubis is a full-screen interruption.
The mascot is, in fact, load-bearing to defuse this tension. I personally recommend people don't replace it because of this.
Rest assured I was paid appropriately by Xe for the Anubis mascot, but genuinely the biggest reward is seeing so many people enjoy my work.
I put a lot of thought into how people might respond emotionally to the Anubis challenge page image, and I'm happy it's had such a positive impact.

If you're starting with art, the number 1 thing you should be drawing is your passion, everything else can come later. Cultivate your passion and drive first.
It seems like beginners get all kinds of things in their minds about what you're supposed to be drawing as an artist. And I don't necessarily mean fundamentals practice with this, I just mean subject matter. And then they avoid drawing anything that really matches their passion like the plague.
If there's one single thing I see beginner artists do wrong all the time, it's not drawing what you're actually interested in.
Like, why are you even doing this if you're not going to be drawing the things you're actually interested in!?

As someone who used to be a TF2 mapper, seeing Anubis on the Valve developer wiki feels pretty good.
I've been asked for permission so I know for a fact there is
never put more than 75% effort into a single page. Save the major background for the establishing shot and imply the rest through gradients, color blurs if you have to.
If a background doesn't add anything you couldn't tell the story without, you might not need one. several jobs for one person!
