Important to note that the three territories as well as any Indigenous on-reserve schools are excluded from PISA testing in Canada. Makes one question the accuracy of our country’s ranking.🤔

Teacher Autonomy and Professional Accountability Last week’s blog generated quite a bit of interest in the issue of teacher autonomy, prompting me to elaborate at some of the underlying issues that I only touched upon lightly in that blog.

"While it is true that testing requires time, well-designed assessments complement instructional practices and inform interventions. Rejecting these tools outright limits the system’s ability to ensure equity and accountability." #bcedchat #bced #bctf

Why Teacher Training is Important - Tracy Weeden

Preservice Teacher Education Programs need to change in #BCEd.

"There is no curriculum police."

I find this statement both alarming and insulting. My role as an educator isn't just to teach, it's to ensure students have learned.

‘Grade inflation’ gives students false sense of their academic abilities We do students no favours when we give them marks they don’t really deserve.

So is this suggesting concerns about grade inflation?

Awareness and support is mounting (slowly but surely). The British Columbia Association of School Psychologists and the Canadian Paediatric Society have both issued position statements about literacy - a social justice issue and a basic human right.

I will have to disagree. "Structured literacy" is an umbrella term. It is not a program; it is a term used to describe evidence-based reading (and writing) instruction.
