Jesse Welles on Renee Good's death at the hands of ICE.
Now they'll circle the wagons,
drape the man in a flag,
and say, "Don't trust what your eyes can see."
They'll say, "It's her fault instead
for getting shot in the head
when we all watch the same damn thing.

We are losing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which has helped educate, inform, and entertain millions of Americans.
Instead, we’re getting a vulgar new gold ballroom, which none of us will ever see.
Rural communities in Appalachia have struggled to transition to clean transportation. But WPLN's @carolineeggers.bsky.social reports rural residents might stand to benefit more than their urban counterparts by switching to electric vehicles.
On April 26, 1907 Carrie Nation came to Grafton, WV, swinging. After scolding a hotel owner for smoking ("smoke away what little brains you have"), she rallied the crowd against alcohol, sold souvenir hatchets and her autobiography, then caught a train to D.C. #Appalachia #History #Prohibition
My plea to Democrats:
"This isn't a battle of your choosing. But it is the battle for which you will always be judged. This is the moment you must show the world and history which side of the Edmund Pettis Bridge you are standing on."

Bill Eads, editor of the Wise County News, was a quirky humorist, political voice, & one-man news machine. His paper thrived, but his business didn’t, and after a failed run as the mayor of Norton, VA, he faded into history, passing away in Marion. #Appalachia

Here’s a picture of the McMinn Co. Courthouse in Athens, TN. In August 1946, the people of the county, led by WWII vets, rose up against corrupt local officials here in what became known as the Battle of Athens.

53 years ago today, the Buffalo Creek flood devastated WV. A coal slurry dam collapse killed 125, left 4,000+ homeless, and wiped out entire towns. Pittston Coal called it “an Act of God.” WV sued for $100 million but settled for only $1 million. #Appalachia #History

🔥WATCH: “My people used to write country songs about this and march with coal miners. Now look at us— singing the boss man’s praises, marching straight towards the cliff’s edge with smiles on.”

Feb. 18, 1969: WV miners walked out for black lung compensation. Their wildcat strike grew to 40,000 workers—and they won. WV passed a law, and national pressure led to new federal mine safety protections.
A powerful lesson: collective action works. #Appalachia #coal #WestVirginia
The Indigenous People of North America have decided to go back to calling the Gulf of Mexico, “Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl”. It is what the Nahuatl People originally called it as it is the domain of the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue, who is assoc w/water bodies, including the Gulf of Mexico.
Feb 13 1913: After the Feb 7 attack on miners at Paint Creek, Mother Jones & 2 miners were chosen to deliver a petition to remove state troops in the area to the governor. Instead, she was arrested & placed under house arrest. Under public pressure the new governor released her in May. #Appalachia
A very interesting story that we've told on our YouTube channel: youtu.be/ho3uzbd4EhE
Tennessee is pushing forward with a state-level grant program to build new electric vehicle chargers on the state’s interstates and major highways even as President Donald Trump’s administration blocks similar spending from federal coffers. From @cstephenson.bsky.social.
Local news operation as well as other Lee Enterprises newspapers and digital platforms have been hit by a "cybersecurity" attack.
In 1953 a Navy officer working on the Manhattan Project had a breakdown and was confined in a secret psych ward—an apartment modified with bars and alarms. He threatened to reveal atomic secrets but never did. His odd late-night piano playing echoed through Oak Ridge until he recovered. #Appalachia
Feb. 7, 1913: A company train called the "Bull Moose Special" opened fire on striking WV coal miners at Holly Grove, killing miner Cesco Estep. Miners later struck back at a mine guard camp at Mucklow—16 died. A key moment in the WV Mine Wars, nearly a decade before Blair Mtn. #Appalachia #History
From @ezrakleinbot.bsky.social. "If you’re always consumed by the next outrage, you can’t look closely at the last one. The impression of Trump’s power remains; the fact that he keeps stepping on rakes is missed. The projection of strength obscures the reality of weakness. Don’t believe him."
