How did you get into writing? And do you have any tips on how to get started if someone, definitely not me, was trying to get into it? I understand if you don't know how to answer that, I just figured I'd ask.
Also! I really enjoyed your game Someone to hold me by the way! I related to it a lot unfortunately, before I realized I was ace, I always felt a little behind compared to my classmates or friends. Even after becoming comfortable with my identity, I still often felt out of place compared to people I knew, but the game. It reminded me again, that I'm not alone, and I've never been more grateful such a game existed. I kept thinking, someone out there feels the same way you do, someone out there is like you. I guess my question is, do you have any other games like it? Or any other stuff you can recommend with ace characters or anything related to that? Thank you for answering.
i've been writing fiction since i learned how to write when i was like 6, but before that my parents always were supportive of me being creative, drawing, telling them made-up stories aloud, reading to me. one of my core childhood memories is of my mom inviting me to create an ending to a book she read to me. i think something shifted in lil mei's brain that day, i have memories of being in kindergarten just staring at the wall and imagining stories of my favorite cartoon characters instead of playing with other kids
if you want to write, just write. sincerely, even if you dont know anything about developing characters or how to make a 'good' story, put something down on a paper. then study your favorite writers, what makes them click for you and what doesn't, how they do pacing, how they showcase character personalities. look up writing tips - there are some blogs on tumblr dedicated to that.
do not be afraid to break the rules if you have something to say. 'repetition bad'? i use repetition extensively in Mizumi & Innocence for breakdown scenes and to depict Lake's OCD. tips you'll learn are just that, tips, YOU get to choose what you will and won't use.
at first you might find yourself being very inspired or even imitating your favorite writers, but with time you'll develop your own voice and style. i don't think i really developed that voice until 2022ish!
thanks for playing StHM! glad to hear you feel seen. i'd recommend checking out submissions for the yearly 'Ace Game Jam' on itchio for short games about the ace experience. there are acespec creators like prikarin, justacarrrot, husbandogoddess, chimeriquement who write about acespec characters that i'd recommend!
got this cool question on tellonym and figured i'd share here re: writing
