Zap Gremlins! A thing that somehow still doesn't exist anywhere else.
I think my evolution has been BBEdit -> TextMate -> Sublime Text-> lost in the wilderness for a while trying to avoid using VSCode -> Zed
Bring back the first gen iPhone SE form factor
I knew if I just waited long enough I could just sit out VSCode. Anyway Zed feels like the spiritual successor to Sublime Text (my one true editor love, with the Railscasts theme, natch).
Concrete staircase coming down to the street from the new LACMA building in LA
Concrete staircase and escalator connecting the Silver Line and Green Line under the 105/110 interchange in LA
The new Zumthor LACMA building is the most LA thing I've ever seen. It's like a homage to the 105/110 interchange and the absolute worst transit station ever built.
A bit early to be trotting this one out but
reminder: take a walk and look at trees today

Hell yes to another worker-owned media org spinning up. Following!
our logo for THE CITY but our pigeon has a cupcake and our C is wearing a birthday hat
[[earnest alert]] THE CITY has been publishing for seven whole years as of this morning.
very proud to be one of the originals. journalists working independently on a nonprofit model without a paywall are endangered species these days, so each year we make it, I thank my lucky stars www.thecity.nyc
From the account in Mark Arax's The Dreamt Land, SF was absolutely worse in mid-1800s than it is now (for the same exact reasons).
Breaking News: The President fires Pam Bondi and inserts Todd Blanche as acting Attorney General of the Justice Department. ICYMI, we chronicled some of Blanche’s business and ethical dealings here. www.propublica.org/article/todd...

And another big project today: We've analyzed millions of member records from the Nazi-Party NSDAP and made them searchable and browsable.

We're doing some really fun stuff with @svelte.dev over here at @propublica.org. Our recent Trump Administration financial disclosures and FDA generic drug databases are built on SvelteKit and DuckDB.
I'm looking for excellent Svelte / SvelteKit contractors in the US with current availability. If that's you, slide into my DMs or email me at ben.werdmuller@propublica.org.
NEW: More than 11,000. That’s how many US citizen children have a parent who has been detained under Trump, our new data analysis shows. When Doris Flores was separated from her four-month-old who was still breastfeeding, she turned to her pastor for help.

It’s kinda like saying something about north Brooklyn in 2026 if you lived there in the late oughts. Like sure it physically still exists in the same place but it’s a fundamentally different thing now.
It’s been dead and buried so long, I’ve been on the other side of all the stages of grief to the point that I now only occasionally think about the place where I met the people who launched my career and my entire professional community.
this is completely insane: since when is it acceptable for a tech company to rewrite news outlets' headlines without their consent? especially at a time when audiences are sensitive to how stories are framed in headlines? (ie Israel/Palestine, the Trump admin, ICE)

I haven't used it in a while, but I wouldn't rely on email if you need truly secure/encrypted comms, I'd use @signal.org.
Can't say enough good things about @fastmail.com, which has zero AI features and is also faster and less cluttered than Gmail: join.fastmail.com/287bc112
As a @propublica.org alum, I urge its leadership to talk seriously with staffers about guardrails around the use of AI in the newsroom. This seems like a solvable issue.
