They say it’s sweeping, bold, visionary.

They’re right — but not in the way they want you to think.

Here’s what’s actually inside — and why it’s a betrayal of working families.

They need to emphasize the shared values of most Americans: “We believe in responsibility, accountability, and fairness - let’s cut real waste, not essential services.”

They need to speak with moral conviction: “We’re fighting for a government that respects hard work, spends wisely, and protects the people who need it most.”

The bottom line is that Democrats need to meet people where they are.

They need to be hammering home a core message: “Taxpayers deserve better than political gimmicks. We need smart, efficient, and fair government - not handouts to the rich disguised as ‘cuts.’”

Here’s what they can say.

“You don’t want ‘big’ or ‘small’ government. You want a government that works.”

“Instead of slashing what helps working families, let’s make government work smarter—cut the waste, keep the programs that serve people, and crack down on real fraud.”

Third, Dems need to go on the offensive, offering a positive alternative: smarter, not smaller, government.

Since Reagan, Republicans have convinced Americans that government is the problem. Democrats should be telling a better story, “Good government does what you need - no more, no less.”

“They’re not cutting government for Wall Street or the well-connected - they’re cutting services that regular people depend on.”

“They call it ‘trimming the fat.’ That ‘fat’ is the nurse treating your child or the inspector making sure your water is safe to drink.”

Tell stories of real people and real consequences.

“They call it ‘cutting waste.’ What does that mean for you? Longer wait times at the VA. Fewer teachers for your kids. Higher costs for your medication.”

Second, Democrats must make the stakes personal, focusing on what “cuts” actually cost.

Republicans claim, “We’re cutting bureaucracy and fraud.” Democrats need to insist, “Their cuts don’t hurt Washington insiders. They hurt you, your family, and your community.”

Examples:

“You work hard, and you deserve a government that works just as hard for you.”

“Real fiscal responsibility isn’t about cutting for the sake of cutting—it’s about making sure your tax dollars go where they actually help people, not where they disappear into corporate loopholes.”

When Republicans say, “We’re cutting waste and fraud,” Democrats need to respond with moral clarity, “We’re making sure your tax dollars are invested wisely - keeping what works, fixing what’s broken, and cutting what actually wastes money.”

Here’s how:

First, Democrats need to reclaim “fiscal responsibility” as a moral obligation.

As usual, Dems continue to lose the messaging war. To counter the Reps “waste and fraud” narrative, Dems need a values-based approach that reframes the debate on efficiency, fairness, and responsibility - core values that resonate with voters who are more receptive to Republican messaging.

Elon Musk and his teenage programmers at DOGE have dominated the headlines over the past few weeks. They have bragged about all of the waste and fraud they have uncovered within the federal bureaucracy. And, according to polls, more Americans approve than disapprove of what they are doing.

If you’re in power and you’re just saying “We don’t have the votes”—what do you expect voters to do? Stay home? Lose hope?

You don’t win by being a bystanding naysayer. The hero wins with the help of a trusted guide.
