Penn's performance makes a lot more sense if you watch the movie as a comedy.

The listener is constantly making predictions; actual infinitesimal predictions as to whether the next event will be a repetition of something, or something different. ... As nearly as we can tell ... the listener must come out right about 50% of the time—if he is too successful in predicting, he will be bored; if he is too unsuccessful, he will give up and call the music "disorganized".

--- Richmond Browne, quoted in Improvising Jazz by Jerry Coker, Prentice-Hall (1964), pg. 15

It's very similar to a quote from Richmond Browne in Jerry Coker's Improvising Jazz.

Make Room! Make Room! A detective hunts down a killer in a dystopian, overpopulated NYC in this classic science fiction novel that inspired the film Soylent Green. Originally published in 1966, Make Room! Make Room! imag...

The novel it's loosely based on is so much better. It focuses on the pathos of ecological destruction without the sensational twist. I feel like it's ripe for a more faithful modern adaptation.

The early Bob Seger System stuff is so bad-ass. Straight-up Detroit garage rock.

It's Lloyd Green on the steel. A legend. Check out his work with Johnny Paycheck on Little Darlin' Records (e.g. The Lovin' Machine) and with Charlie Pride on the Live at Panther Hall recording. So good.

You’re the strongest chain,
You’re not just some reflection,
So never hide AGAIN!

Such a sweet song. Dio stands out to me for his positivity. In a genre that made so much of darkness, he often couched his in an essential message of love and self-actualization.

I love the evolution of this cover art too. They originally used the Diane Arbus photo itself, but I think got a cease-and-desist, so they moved to this drawing of the photo. Later releases had this crazy drawing with the kid dismembered.
