I really miss when old pulp novels and magazines had baller cover artwork like this.

I have such mixed feelings about hunchback because at its best it's sooo good like Hellfire is the actual best Disney villain song ever but the whole thing ultimately feels kinda nerfed when like the silly gargoyles are goofing around etc so I don't really know how to evaluate it as a whole.

This is especially true if the details being changed are like costume/hair related because it's never a plothole if a character decides to like change their clothes lol.

It's up to you if you agree with this or not but in my opinion characters don't really need to have a singular design and if they keep changing as you draw them there's really nothing wrong with that.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand One Piece. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of puns most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. Sometimes I hate it because it makes flaws in the illustration's construction more obvious, but I swear that reviewing your own flawed line art will whip you into shape like nothing else will.

It's honestly fascinating to see someone as good at illustrating as you express this sentiment. But you're right, refined line art is all about kissing your impressionism goodbye and hard committing to specific forms.

I have no idea why that is but I guess if you weren't able to feel at least SOME dissatisfaction then improvement would be impossible, and if you felt no satisfaction than why would you bother in the first place?

For what it's worth I feel like just about every artist has this sort of ebb and flow manic-depressive relationship with their art.

And then in spite of this, the writing acts like it has achieved both.

It's at its worst when the writer wants to arbitrarily give the characters something to have conflict over but then is clearly not willing to make it something actually challenging or difficult for them to work out, so there can be no character growth or relationship progress as a result of it.
