There’s a lot to critique about either film, once you do watch them. It just surprises me to see ppl take a principled stance on not engaging with a film, while simultaneously taking an authoritative stance on the film’s quality with a frequency & fervor kind of unprecedented for an indie film.
Interestingly the causality is reversed; with Salò, the assumption is that the filmmaker is “bad” because of what the film depicts, whereas with CM the assumption is that the film is bad because the filmmaker is “bad” (primarily for perceived transphobia & casting Vack & Brown in part 2 chapter 3)
Forever fascinated by how heavily discussed Castration Movie is by people who have never seen it. I haven’t seen speculative criticism on this level since arguing with guys who had never seen Salò on imdb message boards back in the day.
Careful now, it’s a slippery slope…what’s next, men are okay too?!
