A small ask from an author: if you’re an avid reader and you pick up a book from a small press or an indie author, please consider leaving a review if you enjoyed it.

Even one or two sentences makes a difference. You have no idea how much that means.

Beasts Of Bourbon - Psycho (1988)
Beasts Of Bourbon - Psycho (1988) YouTube video by Kim Salmon

First came across this gem with the Beasts of Bourbon version---1983(?) from Australia. From their Cramps + Nick Cave vibe, I assumed they had written it. Boy, was I surprised when I started digging....

The people banning books are never the same people who actually read books.

Supporting indie bookstores isn’t just about where you buy your books—it’s about keeping money in your community.

Community is more important now than ever before, and indie bookstores have proven at every turn that they will protect, defend, & care for their community members without hesitation.

Last fall, at a booksellers convention, I had people ask, based on the title, if it was about being a school teacher, a librarian, a waiter/waitress. It is a title that is, sadly, all too applicable to all too many jobs.

Among the swag at the Library of Michigan's 2026 Night of Notables (which I was an honoree) was a set of trading cards! How freaking awesome! Even if I look more like "Grizzled Prospector" than "Star 1st Baseman".
I know I can be snarky, but the whole night was so humbling. More later. #booksky

He typically recorded very quickly & with a very specific agenda. I never heard any outtakes. My feeling was it's the artist's record, if they want something left off, there's a reason.
I have no idea what the New Regime will/would do if they found "leftover" tracks. I imagine they would milk them

Am I the only one who thinks the country/culture is worse off because we no longer send novelty records into the Top 10?

When i found this in a thrift store a billion years ago, my brain exploded.

Snazzy suit ironed? Check. Shoes polished? Check. Social anxiety disorder building? Check. Percolating sense of Imposter Syndrome? Double Check.
Off tmrw for the Night of Notables in #lansing to celebrate my book (link in bio). A tremendous and terrifying honor.

Grand day in MKE yesterday w/ @jonbern.bsky.social
After an interview on @wmse917fm.bsky.social -which made me wistful for days of college radio-we had a lovely event @ #boswellbooks. Along the way, we met a couple of OG Bloodshot staffers-Lee & Pete. And sausages @ Vanguard.
Thanks MKE!

you should discover new music by accident. go to small shows where you haven't heard of most of the artists. dig in the crates of a record store and ask the person working there for a recommendation. ask your friends what's been in their ear recently.

Since we're coming to Milwaukee tmrw (4/15), I thought I'd mention my fave MKE-area band. No, not the Violent Femmes (tho they make a brief appearance in my book (link in bio). It's the mighty Couch Flambeau. Start w/their LP "The Day The Music Died"

A Statement In Opposition to HR 7661

The freedom to speak and to read is a fundamental principle of the United States of America. That is why we have joined together — parents, students, educators, library workers, authors, free expression advocates, booksellers, and publishers — to stand in support of our nation’s school-aged children and teens and in opposition to H.R. 7661.

H.R. 7661, if passed, will compel nationwide book censorship. It confuses obscenity with identity and stigmatizes vulnerable young people, particularly trans children and teens, based on who they are. It will continue to drain funding from our already underfunded schools and libraries. And it will threaten the creativity and critical thinking that are vital to education in the U.S.
