DNA damage drives antigen diversification in Trypanosoma brucei - Nature An in vitro toolkit for studying VSG diversification defines key molecular requirements underlying the formation of mosaic VSGs, providing an experimental framework for the exploration of antigen diversification in Trypanosoma brucei and in other pathogenic microorganisms.

Very happy to have contributed some confirmatory experiments to Jaclyn Smith and Monica Mugnier's excellent paper - out now @nature.com

The Loki series by @louiestowell.bsky.social is excellent, and graphic novel series Barb the Brave too (daughter 6 loves it and has started rereading it herself). Son (9) has just got into Percy Jackson at bedtime (he reads the first page), as well as the Pratchett Tiffany Aching series.

Newest collaborative paper out now on biorxiv - new genome and VSG arrangements in T. congolense, excellent work by Marija!

In the words of @scotomorph.bsky.social T. congolense ≠ T. brucei www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

In our system you can change it 3 times and then the 4th can be your original one. Have been doing that for years. Stops eduroam and 2-FA mess ups!

Same (but 6+9)! The nurse who did my eldest at superdrug was surprised I wasn't a medic cos that's all the parents he'd seen before (am a scientist).

I got separate rubella and measles vaccines too when I was young (after having rubella as a baby). No idea when those were though. My EU colleagues are horrified we don't know if we're vaccinated, they all have their records from birth! Hopefully the GP will see sense and just vaccinate you.

Depending where you lived in 1994, you might have got a measles-rubella vaccine in school as a catch-up program. I remember them doing it for us (age13) as there was scandal when one of the girls said she might be pregnant!

There's a card factory on Tottenham Court Road, just south of Goodge St tube. Possibly stretching near Kings Cross!

Hehe! Good plan!! But, you never know when that electroporator that's 100x less efficient than the new one will come in handy 🤣
We're sending the cycler to our bioelectronics unit though, they like fixing it 🤣
It's SO quick for short extension PCRs. Does CRISPR guides in 30 mins!

Ever since I learned about this study enrolling I have been eagerly awaiting the results. Researchers in Uganda took a centuries-old cultural practice mothers carrying babies on their backs in cloth wraps and turned it into a public health tool. You got to love it!

Tangentially-related point. There are plenty of viral infections that, if caught *during pregnancy*, are associated w an increase of c ⅓ in the likelihood of having a child w autism.

If you catch such a virus, & feel shite, what might you take for pain relief?

Fantastic talk, thank you. Super interesting. The kids loved getting their books signed by a real author too ♥️

Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning Drowning is not the violent, splashing call for help that most people expect.

Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on.

@trishgreenhalgh.bsky.social Do you still have a link to that article on drowning that you normally share on twitter? I can't find it. Kids are doing 'drowning prevention week' at lessons, splashing around and shouting! Older one learning to use pool noodles to rescue a friend at least too.

There's the Brownstone Mythical stories series for kids 5-7ish - we've a couple of them and they're nicely written and illustrated.
One is a greek myth admittedly www.penguinrandomhouse.com/series/3BM/brownstones-mythical-collection

Ours is doing "PJs/comfy clothes/dress-up" whatever you want Day. Bring a book if want and have the afternoon reading. Reasonably inclusive, they really try to give lots of options.

#PlanetaryParade excitement is fantastic! #DoLookUp But I'm baffled by the media saying 25th Jan is a "once in a lifetime event" 🔭🧪
The awesome foursome Mars, Jupiter, Venus & Saturn have been on display for weeks + Neptune & Uranus if you have a telescope. We won't see Mercury until late Feb🤔

Why UPF is Dumb — Anthony Warner UPF, or Ultra Processed Food, is a stupid classification system that tells us nothing we did not already know about food. It is as silly as defining the health of food by what letter it begins with.
