...to warm the spaces for people, so may lead to overheating in hotter summers. ☀️
Lessons will be useful for new builds today and the landscaping that surrounds them.

Microclimate of all buildings depends on various factors, yet many traditional buildings and historic churches can be cool spaces. Air circulation and material choices help.

Long overdue visit to a collection today, not open for general visits, made me think of the recently opened V&A East Storehouse. The range of views on the developments there and international contrasts are fascinating plus people wanting to see 'behind the scenes'.

Digital data: Fishbourne Roman Palace   | The Past When it was excavated in the 1960s, Fishbourne Roman Palace generated an archive that, for the time, was incredibly structured and detailed. However, by tod ...

So... We did a thing. And then the thing ended up in Current Archaeology.

Seriously - this is the best thing we've done for AGES. And transforms our ability to understand the Palace. 😎🤩

Good to join a really interesting Historic England and Humanise campaign roundtable discussion this week on wellbeing and emotional connection to buildings/place, incl. the historic environment.
It took place in the fascinating Heatherwick Studio.

A very complex diagram which begins with the question "Do you need a a gift for someone" but, despite many questions and choices, always suggests either giving a book or buying a book for yourself, or gets in a huff and says "I give up!".

A helpful gift shopping algorithm that I made for @theguardian.com a couple of years ago.

Word of the morning is ‘williwaw’ (19th century): a sudden violent squall or a toppling gust of wind.

Goes well with ‘thunderplump’: a sudden downpour that soaks you to the skin in seconds.

Organic is the #museum30 prompt today, and it is the start of #nationaltreeweek as well as St Clements day. Interesting the links between all three in museum/heritage work and interests.

A large tree in a church yard. The tree is so old it has poles supporting its branches.

#NationalTreeWeek is fast approaching.

To celebrate, we'll be sharing some of our favourite trees from across the #SouthDowns

The first is the 1600-year old Wilmington Yew.

Pre-dating both the Norman Conquest and the church it sits next to, this tree needs all the help it can get.

SAVE Britain's Heritage campaign for the M&S building in Oxford Street - #heritage, #sustainability, carbon use of different options - and some exciting examples of new uses for large department stores were all covered in Henrietta Billings' talk this evening. A good one to end the series!

Postcards work the words 'Creating memory- making happy spaces'.

Today's #museum30 prompt is #create.
So much work in #heritage sites and #museums around creating space, experiences, learning opportunities, interpretation and working with many others to do so. These cards were part of a staff/volunteer thank you a couple of years ago.

Colouful small coiled basket made from natural materials

Today's #museums30 prompt is bug.
A hard one, as for many collections the aim is to keep bugs out, especially from items of natural fibres.
