Politicians should never hold the pencil when it comes to drawing riding boundaries. Make no mistake, that's exactly what the UCP are doing to manipulate the outcome of the next election. It's gerrymandering, and never before has a government been so blatantly anti-democratic.

Asked about the electoral boundaries decision, Smith talked about the importance of quality representation in rural Alberta, citing her own communities.

She described the "midsize" Medicine Hat and the "large community" of Brooks.

The Hat is over 3 times the size of Brooks.

The UCP said they would respect the findings of the independent Boundaries Commission ... until they didn't like the results.

Now, they're ignoring the experts, who consulted with thousands of Albertans, to push through a map that would steal your vote and rig the election.

So while acknowledging that the UCP’s pending attempt to gerrymander Alberta is really bad and we should fight against it, the Alberta NDP is going to actually devote organizing resources to rural areas, right? Right? 🥲 #ableg

Elections are about people choosing their representatives, not politicians choosing their voters. Yet that is what the UCP is planning. It is planning to deliberately disenfranchise urban voters. Red Deer and Lethbridge would not exist as autonomous political entities. Calgary/Edmonton hurt too.

For decades, government has chipped away at the public service. Now you wait on hold for hours hoping to speak to someone who can help only to get disconnected.

This is a major line being crossed by Alberta's UCP government. Throwing out the work of an independent boundaries committee is authoritarian and extremely anti-democratic.
