“His editor Malcom Edwards recalled how Ballard, on receiving the first payment for the film rights for Empire of the Sun, decided to splash out by visiting his local supermarket. After wandering the aisles for some time, he returned home with a tin of salmon.” www.theguardian.com/books/2026/a...

Albanian pulp fiction.
Albanian pulp fiction.
And of course old Uncle Enver, but we don’t talk about him now.
Belushi and Mother Teresa as the most famous Albanian exports?
Half way through and, while obviously very Albania specific, quite fascinating.
Further to my post below, a copy of the monthly Albanian communist magazine, IN THE SERVICE OF THE PEOPLE, from 1991, the last year of the regime.
Fair point. You’ve got to take the wins where you find them.
Unfortunately, just as Germany and France potentially move far right.
Yes, fascinating place. l wish l had thd time to travel outside of Tirana.

Done the bunkers, not the cable car. Yes, very cool little city
I am currently in Tirana Albania. Yesterday, l stumbled across an old man selling secondhand books on the street. Amongst his offerings were some old communist magazines featuring my favourite style of images from that era of the Soviet Union - technicians using computers.
When in Albania…
Crime writers, what is stopping the cover of your next book from looking like this?

Reading BILLION-DOLLAR BRAIN & trying to suss out what’s so distinctive about Deighton‘s style. Detailed, meticulous but lyrical all at once. Also feels modern. Deighton had his finger on the pulse of the then changing culture & put that into his books in a way Le Carre & Fleming didn’t & couldn’t.
Yes, seen those, too
No. Won‘t make any difference where you start.

Berlin takes but sometimes it also gives.
Very stylish pic
Standing tall on this hill.
Hard agree
Standing tall on this hill.
Rereading David Peace’s Yorkshire noir quartet for my latest non fiction book project. Best English language crime series of the last 50 years is a hill l’m prepared to die on. Developed major appreciation for NINETEEN EIGHTY THREE, which l thought was a mess but pulls series together brilliantly.
Is this new?
Do it. You won’t regret it. The series also rewards a somewhat consecutive reading.
