Glad to commiserate on the awfulness of VitalChek. On the upside: 1.) when contacting city clerks or churches directly, I’ve found them to be generally helpful & friendly in helping track down exact names, dates, etc., and 2.) one can access Ancestry at the library for free!

I once had a friend (~15 years ago) describe Charlottesville as a place where people are proud to spend the most possible on anything (cue artisanal hot dogs in York Place) and I’d say that expands to our capitalistic tradition of charging as much as the market can possibly bear (+ a bit more).
