On February 17, 1968, Country Joe & The Fish played with the Grateful Dead at the Selland Arena Convention Center in Fresno. This was during the run of shows for Anthem Of The Sun, but the concert was not recorded.

The Grateful Dead are a California band from San Francisco, but there's more than one California. Highway 99 runs up through the fertile center of the state. I look at the Dead's 60s history in the "other" California.

sometimes on the LIRR, i look out the window & think "oh that would be a lovely place to live" & then remember that the LIRR would be zooming by at all times.

This is a new one. Someone subscribed to the newsletter using their work email address. Now their dumb AI assistant is replying to the emails like this. What a world we live in.

As a former StoryCorps facilitator, this is fucking disgusting.

End the project already, Dave.

You created a good model: you encouraged people to sit and do oral history for 20 yrs.

Turning StoryCorps into a surveillance capitalism nightmare is not worth the money to keep the project going.

i find the hall of fame & museum part silly (though haven't been in 25 years), but their archive/library/research collection is pretty stellar.

i still haven't read "meet me in the bathroom" but all that stuff felt like it was happening on a different planet than the nyc i lived in at the time; this one at least feels more real.

definitely learned some stuff, though! like, before it became a venue, 285 kent came very close to becoming lou reed's studio.

that just called up a memory of the lightning bolt show in a parking garage (put on by todd p, pretty sure) where people were setting off fireworks indoors. hadn't thought about it while reading but that's the lawless/chaotic vibe i wish the book documented a bit more in the DIY sections.

Us v Them: The Age of Indie Music and a Decade In New York (2004-2014)

Us v Them: The Age of Indie Music and a Decade In New York (2004-2014)

enjoyed reading this, glad it exists, & delighted to be cited, but didn't quite capture the absurdity of brooklandia as i experienced it & what made DIY venues feel so special. structure felt a bit muddled & could've used a ton more historical/economic context (& more todd p., really).

totally but i feel like itunes is the first place it happened en masse in such a way that it became normalized.

yeah exactly, all solved just by showing the actual date/time

my permanent workaround for this is a scrap playlist (organized with newest date first), where i put drop all new files & make sure they're tagged properly.

similarly drives me up the wall that social media/youtube etc. mark everything in relative time, showing a post was made 3 hours or 122 days or whatever & forcing me to do math. just show me a goddamn date/timestamp, please! (another way mastodon is superior, at least offering the option.)

i blame itunes/ipods squarely for this, which made it the default.

nice @dynamicalories.bsky.social tape of the O & fam in all-improv mode at the secret project robot thanksgiving potluck. i brought roasted brahssels sprouts, if i recall correctly.
