The Grateful Dead's first performance in the Central Valley was at the Stockton Ballroom in Stockton, CA, June 7-9, 1966
Governors Hall was the main building at the California State Fairgrounds until 1967. The Grateful Dead played here on December 28, 1966. In 1967, the Fairgrounds moved to its current site at Cal Expo.
On February 17, 1968, Country Joe & The Fish played with the Grateful Dead at the Selland Arena Convention Center in Fresno. This was during the run of shows for Anthem Of The Sun, but the concert was not recorded.
The Grateful Dead are a California band from San Francisco, but there's more than one California. Highway 99 runs up through the fertile center of the state. I look at the Dead's 60s history in the "other" California.

i find the hall of fame & museum part silly (though haven't been in 25 years), but their archive/library/research collection is pretty stellar.

definitely learned some stuff, though! like, before it became a venue, 285 kent came very close to becoming lou reed's studio.
that just called up a memory of the lightning bolt show in a parking garage (put on by todd p, pretty sure) where people were setting off fireworks indoors. hadn't thought about it while reading but that's the lawless/chaotic vibe i wish the book documented a bit more in the DIY sections.
C & never had to think about it.

enjoyed reading this, glad it exists, & delighted to be cited, but didn't quite capture the absurdity of brooklandia as i experienced it & what made DIY venues feel so special. structure felt a bit muddled & could've used a ton more historical/economic context (& more todd p., really).

my permanent workaround for this is a scrap playlist (organized with newest date first), where i put drop all new files & make sure they're tagged properly.
similarly drives me up the wall that social media/youtube etc. mark everything in relative time, showing a post was made 3 hours or 122 days or whatever & forcing me to do math. just show me a goddamn date/timestamp, please! (another way mastodon is superior, at least offering the option.)
