5/5 Joint work with wonderful colleagues! @angelorenti.bsky.social @pophel.bsky.social

4/5 This is particularly evident in Italy, where women still face structural barriers to entering and re-entering the labour market, more limited access to stable employment, and a higher likelihood of intermittent or precarious work, in a context where public childcare remains limited
3/5 Overall, the results suggest that ensuring the sustainability of pension systems in these two ageing countries requires more than pension reform alone, calling for addressing barriers to labour market participation and reducing fragmented career trajectories
2/5 Our findings reveal clear cross-country differences and persistent inequalities: in Italy, women spend strikingly longer periods in unemployment/inactivity, while in Finland educational inequalities is the main challenge
📣 🆕 The accepted version of our paper is now out in The Journals of Gerontology, Series B!
We compare Italy and Finland and examine gender and educational differences in the time spent in employment, unemployment/inactivity, disability pension, and retirement

The understanding of widowhood evolution over time and distribution among population subgroups is crucial as widowhood burden can crucially shape societal structures and support systems
At the same time, the societal impact of widowhood, including the caregiving burden from the family and the state, may also decrease in response to this
Our study provide some positive results of a decreased and delayed risk of widowhood, suggesting that individuals may benefit from reduced exposure to widowhood and its associated health, social, and financial challenges
In terms of gender differences, women have higher widowhood risk, expectancy, and a lower mean age at widowhood than men. While in terms of educational differences, low-educated have lower mean age at widowhood for both genders and, for women, also higher risk and duration
We found that, over the past 30 years, individuals are less likely to experience widowhood compared to the past, and when they do, widowhood occurs at older ages. The widowhood expectancy (or average duration of widowhood) declined over time for women and remained stable for men
