A new paper Fidan et al. (2026) demonstrates that wealth and the rate of land-cover change play a key role in determining the occurrence of fatal landslides in mountain areas. These factors are statistically more significant that precipitation and topography.

On 19 March, a c.2000 cubic metre rockslide blocked the northern bound lanes of Interstate 5 near to Bellingham, WA, USA. The road will not fully reopen until later this week.

This must be the site of the deadly Rubaya landslide from early March. This area is v. cloudy and so decent satellite imagery (as in this example from @planet.com) are rare. The slide looks to have buried some buildings (no more than half dozen) in the main slide path w/ maybe more on the plateau πŸ§ͺβš’οΈ

A rock mass detached from the Yanasacha summit cliff and then triggered an ice avalanche onto the glacier! 🌊🧊

The deposit spans ~1000 vertical distance between 5,700 and 4,700 m asl! 😲
