We're at the Council hearing awaiting the Juvenile Curfew vote.
Less than 30 minutes left in the hearing & Phil Mendelson suggests postponing the curfew vote.
Anita Bonds: no more delays. Stay until midnight if needed. This issue matters to the community. Take it seriously. #JuvenileCurfewZones

Update: The vote didn’t move forward.

Councilmember Brooke Pinto’s youth curfew proposal was tabled 8–5 after Phil Mendelson proposed postponing the vote.

The law is still set to sunset on April 15.

They did not succeed in making it permanent.

This is a temporary win. Now we make sure it ends.

We appreciate you covering this but this is a misrepresentation of the conversation between HWD & CM Henderson, for whom we have deep respect. What you’re describing as a “heated debate” was a direct conversation about policy. Black women speaking with clarity and conviction is not aggression.

Groups opposed to Trump’s intervention in DC (like @freedcproject.bsky.social @harrietsdreams.bsky.social) are at the Wilson Building rallying support for the veto override (and opposition to youth curfews). The mother of Phillip Brown (the man shot at by HSI) is among the speakers.

A curfew update: Ward 5 CM Zachary Parker says he does NOT think the extension has the votes to pass, so it’ll be pulled from the agenda. Something similar happened last fall and it ultimately passed.

Henderson also got into a heated debate with @harrietsdreams.bsky.social on this.

We’re at the Wilson Building awaiting the DC Council vote on the Full Accountability in Arrest Reporting (FAAR) Amendment Act.

Introduced by Robert White, this bill would require MPD to document when federal agents are present at arrests, document federal use of force, & release bodycam footage.

DC has everything it needs to keep young people safe. We have the resources, the community partners, and the solutions. What is missing is the political courage to choose care instead of control. Our children deserve safety, joy, and a sense of belonging, not curfews and armed soldiers.

5 months ago 1 1 0 1

We’re demanding real safety rooted in community care:
• Remove National Guard & federal agents from youth spaces
• Fund late-night rec centers, arts, sports & cultural programs
• Community-based crisis response (not police)
• Accessible mental health care for youth

“Young people are not failing — the systems meant to support young people are failing.”

📚 Research from the Campbell Collaboration shows no meaningful decrease in youth crime.
Instead, curfews increase police contact, trauma, and surveillance of Black youth.

Curfews don’t keep kids safe.

15+ DC organizations including Harriet’s Wildest Dreams, @freedcproject.bsky.social, Black Swan Academy, DC Action & more are calling for:

❌ An end to the extended youth curfew
❌ Removal of the National Guard from youth spaces

5 months ago 1 0 0 1

Instead of creating safe, well-resourced spaces for youth, DC leaders responded with curfews, soldiers, and fear.

Our responsibility is to protect them, not criminalize them.
