the clearance issue is definitely a factor, and I agree samples can sometimes help get the creativity flowing

in most cases no, but I respect artists that do, digging for samples is an art form in itself. I always get a bit frustrated trying find a sample to match how I’m feeling and it’s easier for me to play it and chop it up as needed, plus I enjoy the sound design aspect as well.
