UPDATE: Some good news. We now have the text and there appears to be an exemption for masks worn for public health purposes.

However this ban could still deter mask wearing generally, and will still result in profiling and surveillance of activists and communities of color.

Atlanta Community Press Collective @atlanta_press At the end of today’s Atlanta City Council meeting, Councilmember Antonio Lewis introduced an ordinance that would ban any sort of face coverings that obscure identity in the city of Atlanta. There are some exceptions in the proposed legislation for religion, work and holidays. There is a carve out in the ordinance for health related masking as well.

ACPC_Live @ACPC_Live CM Lewis introduces ELMS 34324, an ordinance to prohibit the wearing of ski masks, masks, barrier face coverings, hoods or any other device that conceals the identify of the wearer. Winston, Boone, Bond, Waites, Hillis, Amos, Westmoreland, and Overstreet all co-sponosred Lewis prohibition of items that conceal facial identities. The ordinance will be discussed at the Public Safety Committee Meeting on Monday, Dec. 11.

This is bad. Atlanta is proposing a blanket ban on masks. (Sounds like healthcare workers & religious face coverings might be exempt)

There is no evidence mask bans reduce crime. But mask bans do increase disease spread, violate free expression rights, & are misused to stop & frisk people of color.

-Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday, not an Israeli holiday
-the magen david (Star of David) is a Jewish symbol used on the Israeli flag and more importantly is a major part of Jewish symbology in general
-canceling Hanukkah celebrations is antisemitic
