The Rapacious Heart, his, nabbed for a pretty penny from a southside antiquities shopkeep that didn’t know what she truly possessed upon its shelves. The weak-eyed gator had simply tutted at the pearl’s sheen, quoted him a week’s pay, and grinned with a mawful of fangs and a ravenous glimmer down her snout when he’d produced just enough from his wallet in cash. If she’d only known, she would have charged him more than he could earn in a lifetime…or would have taken its power for herself. Or tried to, at least. He carefully pinched between finger and thumb as he traced his tongue across the rim of his beak. The spells imbued bore origins lost to time and power for one of appetite beyond comparison. Countless civilizations and calamities had claimed credit and blame in sorcerer’s legends, from the sinking of Atlantis by a monstrous Minoan bull to a Roman dragon’s monstrous post-volcanic ingestion dooming the denizens of Pompeii. Stories denied by history, perhaps, but any ambitious magician who’d dabbled long enough knew how effortlessly such disastrous ends faded with time, and craved the power and awesome, cataclysmic revelry such artifacts unleashed upon their chosen users.
