I always like to have a shortlist of 25 coming into these polls. I have 27 and it's really hard to cut down so I'm reluctantly dropping these 2.

I never got madly into the 2 Tone thing but The Specials were the pick of the bunch. Preferred the 2nd and 3rd album to the debut which won't make my final 25.

I've managed to cut the shortlist down to 29 and really want to get it to 25 so I'm going to have to be ruthless,so as much as I love The Fall this won't make the list.

Absolutely loved this as a teenager and probably haven't listened to it since. While it's been great rediscovering it..it's not going to make my final 25.
I'm leaving The Stranglers, Xray Spex and Elvis Costello out as well.

While there's hints of classic Blondie and several nods to The Shangri-las they weren't quite there yet. Good debut but won't make my final 25. I'm leaving out The Only Ones, Ian Dury and Graham Parker as well.

Brilliant ๐
A collaboration that didn't end well for either party. While it's an ok album it's hardly a career highlight for either. Won't make my final 25. Neither will The Jam, Ruts, The Police or Pere Ubu.

Hi Richard. Quick question.
Paul Brady Welcome here kind stranger, solo debut released 2 years after the Paul Brady/Andy Irvine lp...Does it qualify?

While this is a good album it never really resonated with me in the way Fear Of Music or Remain In Light did so I'm leaving it out. No room for Richard Hell, Japan or Simple Minds either.

Loved The Skids back in the day but it was more about the singles. Good album, still sounds good but it won't feature for me.
I'll add The Raincoats, Wire and The Damned to that.

Fine debut released in '76 but this particular poll is going to be dominated by the arrival of punk and new wave and I've a shortlist of 53. Having said that I'm also dropping Throbbing Gristle, Secret Affair and The Ramones.

Hi Richard
My top 5 is
1 Fatima Mansions Against Nature
2 Grant Hart Intolerance
3 Gavin Friday Each Man Kills The Thing He Loves
4 My Bloody Valentine Isn't Anything
5 Lemonheads Hate Your Friends

Number 1
I've always been a huge fan of Cathal from the very early days in Cork. Fatima Mansions for me is the high point of everything he did. The debut arguably has some of his best songs. I remember those early incredible gigs.

Number 2
I remember being very excited about this album coming out. Grant returned to SST and made this incredible DIY sounding album where he literally did everything himself. His best record.

Number 3
It really made sense musically to go from The Virgin Prunes to this record. It's got the whole Berlin Cabaret thing, a bit of Bowie and lots of Gavin Friday...Great version of Death Is Not The End also.

Number 4
Probably one of the most original bands ever. Nobody else sounds like them and this is their best record in my opinion.
#5debutalbums8589
Going to do this early as I'm working.
Number 5.
Early Lemonheads were brilliant, especially the first 3 albums when Ben Dailly was in the band and before they went all Simon And Garfunkel.

Number 6
I like this record but I don't love it ... same goes for all of Bobs post Husker Du stuff except Black Sheets Of Rain. Having said that it has it's moments.
Won't make my 5 though.

Number 7
While I'm not a huge Steve Albini fan this is a great record. A major game changer that still resonates.
Kerosene still sounds sinister and scary.
#5debutalbums8589
Number 8
Despite being in a really successful band Karl Wallinger had his own songs...granted they might sound like others (Dylan) at times..this is still a great record.

Number 9
The debut is much rawer than the later albums. Very psychedelic...Great cover of The Stooges Little Doll.
Their more spiritual side was yet to come.
#5debutalbums8589
Time to cut the shortlist from 10 to the final 5.
Number 10
I love the absolute simplicity of this record. Sounds like they just plugged in and started playing. Reminds me of The Velvets.

Love it
