ChatGPT abstractly rendered map of California.

ChatGPT tried and failed to render a location map of California. Not a ChatGIS.

Congress and the courts need to step up and stop the narcissist in chief from starting World War III. I can’t believe we’ve descended to this point.

Great example we are setting for other autocrats coveting a neighbor’s territory and resources.

Having served on hiring committees and written letters for candidates, this is the normal way it is done. The committee first makes a long list and requests letters from those. Then they assess that group (including letters) to choose interview short list.

This sums up well the feeling I get from watching the destruction of the scientific enterprise in the U.S. The downstream effects of this will be the loss of a generation of scientists.

Grants cancelled. Centers defunded. What more wrecking will there be? The war on science is getting grim.

Good for Harvard! They have the deep pockets to keep things running while they fight this fascist regime!

If you haven’t heard of canary mission yet, search for it and check if your name or your friends are listed, then ask yourself about the future of dissent in America.

Oil field data does play important role in fault characterization within coastal basins (Los Angeles, Ventura, etc) and Central Valley.

These data do play a role for characterizing thrust faults and other stuff hidden in basins, especially after the 1983 Coalinga EQ. And the oil people figured out the value of drilling anticline-shaped hills long before earthquake geologists became interested.

There’s a lot more seismic activity in California with numerous historic earthquake surface ruptures. Not so much in the PNW. The onshore faults are so much less active. Also: trees.

I love geologic maps. Here are some old Soviet CCCP era geologic maps. In the global pursuit of natural resources, geology was essential. In the US, we have lost most of our talent in mineral resources due in part to over specialization. Geologic maps are where one begins…

Pull apart basin along the Lenwood fault, Mojave Desert, California

Chasing ancient earthquakes in the Mojave was a great way avoid thinking about the awful things in the world.

I fondly recall Altadena as a diverse, bucolic neighborhood. I hope it rebuilds with that same energy.

I never imagined the Altadena neighborhood I once lived in could be gone this way. Feeling sad for all the loss. No doubt involving people I know. I hope they are ok.

Is anyone putting out an onshore seismometer array near the Cape Mendocino EQ? Do they need help from enthusiastic students? Great opportunity to improve imaging of a complicated place.
