I mean, in my country there is no official third gender, only male and female, he/him and she/her. We then only use they/them when addressing more than one person (like in a group).
But for any/trans or other genders, they/them is still recommended, if we are not sure of the gender.

For me, it usually happens when I'm translating, when I'm writing to friends who are any/trans/other, and I often use he/him as a base (because in my language I NEVER use they/them if only referring to just one person). And well there were some who were grossly offended by the "he/him" call...
