It's time for California to get serious about high-speed rail. The current timeline is unacceptable.
That means work must begin on the tunnels that will connect the line’s first segment with the state’s primary population centers.
Maglev will never compete with the energy efficiency, interoperability, and scalability of steel-on-steel high-speed rail.

The Passenger Rail Planning Act may be amended to shift the initial planning responsibility to the existing Illinois High Speed Rail Commission – meaning that deliberations and recommendations will come from people whose priority is trains, not highways.
Amtrak announced this week that it has launched procurement for more than 800 single-level coaches, sleeping cars, dining cars, and lounge cars for its long-distance routes. Excellent news - but we must stay engaged to assure there are no further delays.

Amtrak needs to run more trains period. Perhaps the trains will have to be somewhat longer in the interim. It’s hard to say. We have called for north of 1000 new units to be built to meet rising demand. Replacing old rolling stock before they are forced out of service is a start.
Amtrak is officially accepting proposals from manufacturers to replace their aging fleet of long-distance rolling stock. The program entails over 800 new single-level railcars for all 14 long-distance routes.
Let's get this order placed and built as quickly and as excellently as possible.

America's first serious attempt at high-speed rail was a federally-launched project authorized by the Johnson administration to compete with Japan's Shinkansen. Did it fulfill its mission? Not quite, but the impact of the Metroliner has been undeniable.
We are fighting every day to make Chicago-to-St. Louis high-speed rail a reality. It's a national priority.

There have been gasoline price spikes before, going back to the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973. Congress reacted, in part, by modernizing Amtrak's fleet, which has benefited train travelers for decades.
It's time to do it again.

Indiana should definitely invest in more passenger rail beyond the SSL. There ought to be hourly service to Indianapolis. This whole three-round-trips-a-WEEK thing is ridiculous 😑
