'No Propaganda on Earth Can Hide the Wound That Is Palestine: Arundhati Roy's PEN Pinter Prize Acceptance Speech 'I refuse to play the condemnation game. Let me make myself clear. I do not tell oppressed people how to resist their oppression or who their allies should be.'

Arundhati Roy's incandescent award acceptance speech about Palestine and Lebanon, in which she acknowledges so many jailed writers.

"Not all the power and money, not all the weapons and propaganda on earth can any longer hide the wound that is Palestine."

Cruel policy and a betrayal of human rights and our values.

I understand the political value, but the politics of immigration are not going to change as long as we continue to accept the right's frame. And we really need to change them before we sink much deeper into climate crisis.

Would also love a world where the Harris response “transgender operations on illegal aliens” is a recognition that trans (and all other kinds) of health care is a human right and undocumented and incarcerated individuals are fully human rather than distancing herself from earlier progressive stances

Would love to see democrats counter this xenophobic hate speech by doing literally anything besides showing that they’re also willing to dehumanize migrants with increased border militarization and weakened asylum protections

I believe our democracy depends on Kamala Harris defeated Donald Trump in November.

This speech seems completely consistent with that belief and that goal.

Syracuse University punishes student legal observer for pro-Palestinian protest A Syracuse University student has been found guilty of violating the school's student code of conduct over their alleged participation in a pro-Palestinian protest.

Academic milestone: Paid by the university to teach students to engage in global politics, and punished by the university for keeping students safe as they engage in global politics

Though transphobes across the political spectrum claim they are concerned with sex—not gender—these parallel claims that 1. strong women must be male and 2. men who defer to women must be female tells us that policing sex is fundamentally a means of creating and enforcing gender

This weeks roundup of misplaced transphobia demonstrates the ways that—beyond harming trans people—transphobia often extends to cis people to create and enforce a regulatory system around what it’s “natural” and therefore “right” for men and women to be

you don’t have to subject yourself to images of gruesome violence, but you should know that they exist, that you and I paid for that brutality with our taxes and our ignorance, and that nearly every one of our elected officials thinks that that violence is good and that we should fund more of it

There is no academic freedom at universities while they fund genocide and support the military industrial complex when conducting the “normal” politics of academia means legitimizing and/or intellectually or financially contributing to these institutions.

When so much of grad schools feels like socialization in how to compromise enough for the academy to be rewarded by it, it’s a privilege to learn from student encampments what it looks like to risk security so that education/scholarship might become liberatory.

Proud to have been part of the team that computationally analyzed the New York Times' biased coverage of Israel and Palestine. This is part of a broader effort by Writers Against the War On Gaza, who released today a tour-de-force exposé of NYT: newyorkwarcrimes.com

Queer kids lose their innocence when forced to navigate a world made hostile and dangerous to them, and their peers lose their innocence when parents, schools, and politicians deputize them to maintain that hostility. Transphobia threatens the innocence of all children.

2 years ago 35 12 0 0

The religious right so often frames anti-LGBTQ school policies as protecting childhood innocence, but it’s their anti-trans vitriol that radicalized 3 teenagers enough to fatally wound a peer and their policies that have other queer kids afraid of the same. Nex Benedict should be happy and alive.

Middle East Crisis: U.S. Defends Israel’s Policies Toward Palestinians At the United Nations’ top court, a U.S. official argued that calls for Israel to withdraw from occupied Palestinian territories ignore the country’s “real security needs.”

“Israel has long rejected accusations that it operates an apartheid system, calling such allegations a slur…”
