New work from my team: pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
We used probes to ID targets of carbapenems in M. abscessus. 17 targets active in both carbon starved and replicating cultures. Includes validation of 9 targets. Part of a special issue ("NTM Pathogens – Biology, Infection, and Drug Discovery).

Vaccine invented. Disease plummets. (Repeat)

Over the seven decades since the polio vaccine, we have seen this pattern again and again.

Vaccines have a great track record.

Opinion | Big Tech Owes Scholars. It’s Time to Pay Up. The expert knowledge powering AI came from the academy. Time to pay up.

I don't use AI for my scholarly writing. My papers/reviews/grants/etc. are original text generated by me. Because of this, I am deeply uncomfortable with the theft of written work/ideas from authors and scholars to train large langue models. I agree with is: 👇

Your post inspired me to post my dissent to all that is being done to destroy research in the US. Thank you.

I absolutely have a viewpoint. Until recently, the US was a leader in research & NIH was something of which all Americans could be proud. Productive, innovative, life-saving. Trump, RFK Jr., and Bhattacharya are systematically destroying our research capacity. I won't be silent in my dissent.

The President's fiscal year 2027 Budget was released today.

Important---Important---Important

The President's Budget is always fundamentally a political document that Congress may or may not (usually not) take very seriously.

My most recent PhD candidate, who was amazing (Julia Doh) defended in April 2020. I love working with graduate students, but OHSU's program is small (15-20 students/year for all the faculty). Advice?

I serve on NIH study sections. I consider it a privilege and a duty. It is hard but rewarding work. Right now it seems like the least I can do to support our colleagues at NIH.

Does College Pay Off? A Comprehensive Return On Investment Analysis - FREOPP While prospective students often ask themselves if college is worth it, this report shows the more important question is when college is worth it.

I place a really high value on a college education. I wish that college was more accessible. Yet, I found this article absolutely fascinating. The ROI varies widely-- I wish that programs/colleges were forced to disclose this information.

I wish Trump, Musk, and RFK Jr. could directly observe the suffering & deaths that they are causing. This call to action for WHO is timely because, as stated, "...the US’s recent decisions have greatly amplified the risk of multiple international outbreaks of disease".

The vaccine news headlines are frustrating-- they read like there is new information. "Vaccines prevent measles!" "Vaccines save lives!" They should be accompanied by a 1950s voice-over like those jokey documentaries on film strips for kids.

How DOGE Gutted the NEH in 22 Days Internal documents show how leadership at the National Endowment for the Humanities handed over the grant termination process to DOGE and ChatGPT.

Big surprise, the DOGE wrecking ball made a lot of bad decisions, with no expertise, with no clear thought, and their actions were most likely illegal. I co-blame Musk and Trump for this one, but Michael McDonald's complicity should cost him his job.

Cracked, but still there: the glass ceiling persists for senior women in science To mark International Women’s Day on 8 March, Mangala Srinivas reminds junior colleagues that career success won’t protect you from gender-based bias.

Cracked, but still there: the glass ceiling persists for senior women in science www.nature.com/articles/d41...

It is depressing to know that I have been reading articles like this for most of my career and that I will likely keep reading them for the next 20 years. Yes, gender bias persists.
